Vachana 339 — The Rebuke That Awakens

Summary

In this vachana, Basavanna says that Kudalasangama’s Sharanas kick, strike, and shake him.

They do this because his Bhakti has not truly risen into the right state. Their correction is not ordinary insult; it exposes what remains unformed in devotion.

They rebuke and speak as the Sharanas of Kudalasangama. The teaching is that the seeker must receive their hard word as correction toward truth.

Imagery & Symbolic Relevance

Kicking is the first sharp image. It shows correction that reaches the body of the seeker, not merely his ideas.

Striking is the second image. It removes softness from the scene; this is not flattering guidance.

Shaking is the third image. What is unstable or asleep must be disturbed before it can awaken.

The statement about Bhakti gives the reason. The issue is not that devotion is absent in name, but that it has not yet become true enough to stand.

Rebuke and speech complete the movement. Kudalasangama’s Sharanas do not remain silent before incomplete devotion. They speak in order to correct.

Lingayoga

In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches that practice must accept correction.

The practice-point is direct: do not protect a devotional self-image. Let the Sharanas’ word strike the mind where Bhakti has not yet become true.

For Sharana Sthala, this is the humility of being corrected by Kudalasangama’s Sharanas.

Supporting Vachana

Pranalingi Sthala Vachana 1117 — Teach My Mind, Not Merely My Speech

Pranalingi Vachana 1117 supports this teaching by distinguishing outer correction from correction of the mind. There, Basavanna says that people taught him how to speak to others and rebuked him for wealth, but Madivala Machayya corrected him for the sake of the mind. Vachana 339 gives the Sharana form of that same inward correction: Kudalasangama’s Sharanas rebuke, strike, and speak so that Bhakti may become true.

Advancing Vachana

Aikya Sthala Vachana 1166 — Kriya Is the Body, Jnana the Life-Breath

Aikya Vachana 1166 advances this teaching by showing that speaking of Kriya and Jnana is not enough; their union must be lived as Anga-Linga, Linga-Jangama, Arpita, Prasada, body, and life-breath. Vachana 339 shows the seeker being corrected because Bhakti has not yet risen into truth; Aikya Vachana 1166 shows the mature integration where action and realization become one living condition before Kudalasangama Deva.
