Vachana 852 — The Body Made Offering in the Fire of Knowing

Summary

Basavanna presents the body as a vessel. Into this vessel, consciousness becomes the living substance, equanimity becomes the water, and the faculties become the gathered ingredients. The body is not rejected; it becomes the place where transformation is prepared.

He then kindles the fire of knowledge. With mati, discernment or awakened intelligence, as the stirring ladle, the contents are brought to ripening. The process is not scattered or accidental. It is measured, held, heated, ripened, and steadied.

The final movement is offering. When the preparation is cooled in bhava and brought to its proper transformation, it becomes fit for Kudalasangama Deva’s receiving. The Sharana-stage teaching is clear: the whole embodied being must be transformed into an offering. Body, awareness, equanimity, faculties, knowledge, discernment, and bhava must become one prepared offering before the Lord.

Imagery & Symbolic Relevance

The body as vessel is the opening image. Basavanna does not treat the body as an obstacle to be discarded. The body is the container in which the inner process takes place.

Consciousness is the living substance placed in the vessel. Without chaitanya, the body remains only a container. Awareness gives the preparation its life.

Equanimity as water gives steadiness and balance. Water allows the contents to be held, softened, and cooked without burning into disorder. Samate therefore becomes essential to transformation.

The faculties are the gathered ingredients. Basavanna does not describe them as enemies to be destroyed. They must be gathered into the vessel and brought under the transforming process.

Knowledge as fire is the central transformative force. Jñāna here is not mere information. It is the fire by which the gathered life is cooked into maturity.

Mati as the stirring ladle gives the process its discipline. Fire alone is not enough; discernment must stir, regulate, and keep the preparation from remaining raw or becoming distorted.

Ripening and cooling in bhava complete the image. The offering must be cooked, brought to maturity, and settled in right inward feeling. Only then does it become fit for Kudalasangama Deva’s ārogaṇe, His sacred receiving.

Lingayoga

In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches the transformation of the whole embodied field. The body, consciousness, equanimity, faculties, knowledge, discernment, and bhava are all brought into one sacred preparation.

For Sharana Sthala, the practice-point is total inward offering. The Sharana does not merely offer an external object. He allows the body itself to become the vessel and the whole life-process to become fit for Kudalasangama Deva.

This also clarifies the relation between knowledge and offering. Jñāna must cook the being; mati must guide it; bhava must settle it. Only then does the offering become mature. What is finally offered is not a thing outside the seeker, but the seeker’s transformed being.

Pranalingi Sthala Vachana 963 — Body, Mind, and Being as the Vessels of Linga

Pranalingi Vachana 963 supports this teaching by assigning body, mind, and bhava their proper relation as vessels for Linga, and by saying that Bhakti-pariyāṇa becomes the only vessel fit for sacred receiving. This prepares Vachana 852 directly. In Vachana 963, the body, mind, and bhava become proper vessels before Linga; in Vachana 852, the body itself becomes the vessel in which consciousness, equanimity, faculties, knowledge, discernment, and bhava are prepared into an offering fit for Kudalasangama Deva.

Advancing Vachana

Aikya Sthala Vachana 1166 — Kriya Is the Body, Jnana the Life-Breath

Aikya Vachana 1166 advances this teaching by joining Kriya and Jnana into one realized condition. It says that in Kriya is the union of Anga and Linga, in Jnana is the union of Linga and Jangama, and for the Sharana established in Kriya and perfected in Jnana, Kriya itself is the body and Jnana itself the life-breath. This is the natural Aikya fulfillment of Vachana 852. In Sharana Vachana 852, the body is cooked and ripened in the fire of knowledge until it becomes fit offering; in Aikya Vachana 1166, action and knowledge are no longer separate, the body becomes Linga, the life-breath becomes Jangama, and the integrated being stands watchful before Kudalasangama Deva.
