This vachana maps the inner geography of a soul consumed by divine love. Basavanna describes a state where devotion is no longer a voluntary act but an involuntary, all-pervading condition of the heart, senses, and speech. This intense, all-consuming longing (viraha) is not a sign of absence, but the most potent proof of God’s imminent presence. It is the state where the seeker’s entire being has been re-calibrated to a single frequency: the remembrance of the Divine.
Spiritual Context
Core Spiritual Principle: The highest form of devotion is not peaceful contentment, but a state of intense, joyful anguisha longing so total that it consumes the individual and becomes the very engine of their existence. This longing is the final purification before union.
Cosmic Reality Perspective: In the non-dual view, this longing (viraha) is the dynamic tension that sustains the universe the play between Shiva (the Absolute) and Shakti (the creative energy). The devotee’s personal viraha is a microcosmic participation in this cosmic dance. It is the soul’s gravitational pull towards its source.
Historical Reality (Anubhava Mantapa Context): This Vachana elevates the path of intense emotional devotion (bhakti) to its zenith. It moves beyond social reform and philosophical debate into the raw, personal testimony of mystical love, validating a spirituality of the heart that is accessible to all, irrespective of intellectual capacity.
Interpretation
“In my heart, a ceaseless yearning to see You.”: The heart (manas) is the seat of emotion and desire. Here, all worldly desires have been burned away, leaving only the singular, primal desire for the Divine. This is not a passive wish but an active, burning fire (tapas).
“In my eyes, an unending ache to behold You.”: The senses are repurposed. The eyes no longer seek worldly beauty; they ache for the darshan (vision) of the Beloved. This “ache” signifies that the senses themselves have become organs of devotion, feeling their limitation and yearning to be filled with the Divine form.
“On my tongue, a constant readiness to sing Your praise.”: Speech is transformed. The tongue is perpetually on the verge of uttering the Lord’s name. This indicates a state of spontaneous, effortless remembrance (ajapa japa) where the divine name flows like a continuous inner river, ready to manifest outwardly at any moment.
Practical Implications: The seeker understands that spiritual dryness or longing is not a failure but a sacred stage. The practice is to lean into this longing, to cultivate it through remembrance, and to allow it to purify all other desires, trusting that this very ache is God’s way of drawing the soul home.
The Cosmic Reality
Anga (Human Dimension): The human faculties heart, eyes, tongue have been perfectly aligned and dedicated. They are no longer instruments of the ego but are fully consecrated, functioning only in relation to the Divine.
Linga (Divine Principle): Koodalasangamadeva as the ultimate Beloved, the magnet that creates this intense attraction in the soul. He is both the source of the longing and its ultimate fulfillment.
Jangama (Dynamic Interaction): The state of longing itself is the Jangama. It is the living, moving relationship between the soul and God. It is not a static absence but a dynamic, creative tension that continuously fuels the seeker’s journey and transforms their entire being.
Shatsthala
Primary Sthala: Pranalingi. This stage is defined by the Linga becoming one’s very breath and life force (Prana). The Vachana describes this reality: the longing is in the heart (life-force), the ache is in the senses (vitality), and the praise is on the tongue (breath). The devotee’s entire pranic existence is saturated with the Linga.
Supporting Sthala: Sharana. The Sharana stage of receptivity and offering is the prerequisite. One must first be a willing vessel (Sharana) to be filled with this all-consuming divine passion (the state of the Pranalingi).
Practical Integration
Arivu (Awareness Practices): Meditate on the feeling of longing itself. Instead of seeking to satisfy it, rest in the raw energy of the ache. Feel it in the heart, behind the eyes, and as an unspoken word on the tongue. Let this be your primary object of meditation.
Achara (Personal Discipline): Create a personal discipline of remembrance. Set regular times for japa or prayer, but let the goal be to ignite the inner longing that then burns continuously throughout the day.
Kayaka (Sacred Action): Perform all actions as an offering to quench this longing. Let your work be a prayer, a way of expressing the ache for the Divine through mindful, devoted action.
Dasoha (Communal Offering): Share the “currency” of your longing. Be with others who are on the path. Singing bhajans (devotional songs) together is a powerful way to collectively express and amplify this state of divine yearning.
Modern Application
Existential emptiness, distraction, and the constant, shallow seeking of fulfillment in consumption, relationships, and entertainment, which leads to a sense of meaninglessness.
This Vachana teaches that the feeling of an inner void is not a problem to be medicated away, but a sacred signal. It is the soul’s native longing for the Divine. Instead of filling this void with worldly noise, one can honor it, cultivate it, and recognize it as the most authentic part of oneself, thus transforming existential angst into a powerful spiritual engine.
Essence
The heart a furnace, keen and deep,
The eyes a vigil, sworn to keep.
The tongue a gate, through which may pour,
The one name it was meant for.
The Deeper Pattern (The Subtle Body): This Vachana describes a state of Quantum Coherence achieved through Symmetry Breaking. The seeker’s consciousness, once a system with multiple potential states (various desires), has undergone a spontaneous symmetry breaking. The Linga has become an attractor, collapsing all quantum probabilities into a single, ordered state: the state of longing. The heart, eyes, and tongue are no longer independent “particles” but are quantum entangled in this one coherent field of devotion. The “ceaseless yearning” is the measurable energy signature of this new, low-entropy, highly ordered spiritual system.
In Simple Terms (The Gross Body): A compass needle doesn’t need to understand geography; it is simply pulled by the magnetic north. In this state, the seeker is like that compass. The heart, senses, and speech are all magnetized, irresistibly and joyfully pointing toward their divine North, Koodalasangamadeva. The longing is the proof of the pull.
The Human Truth (The Causal Body): Your deepest ache is not your wound; it is your compass. The most powerful human drive is not for pleasure or security, but for union with the source of being. When all other desires are silenced, this one remainsnot as a lack, but as the ultimate proof that you are already connected to what you seek by the very thread of your longing.
