Vachana 1398 – Beyond All Lineage and Comparison

Summary

Basavanna rebukes the one who defines Ganapati, Bhairava, and Shanmukha merely as the children born of Hara and Shakti. Such a statement confines the Divine within lineage and inherited narrative.

He rebukes still more sharply the one who declares, “Hari and Hara are one.” To define Hara through equivalence with Hari is still to measure the Divine through comparison.

Basavanna therefore turns beyond Hari, Hara, their relationships, and all such theological reckonings. Kudalasangama Deva alone is Ajāta-caritra—whose origin cannot be traced—and Apratima-mahima—whose glory has no equal.

The Vachana ends not with another argument, but with a command: behold Kudalasangama Deva alone.

Editorial Commentary

Benaka refers to Ganapati or Ganesha.

Pātaka means grave error, transgression, or spiritually destructive assertion. It gives the opening rebuke its severity.

Shiva-drohi means one who betrays or stands against Shiva. Here it identifies the error of reducing Hara to comparative equivalence.

Ajāta-caritra means one whose arising, birth, or origin cannot be traced through a narrative of beginning.

Apratima-mahima means one whose greatness has no likeness, equal, or comparison.

Obbane means alone or the only One.

Kāṇi bho is a direct command to behold. The Vachana culminates in seeing rather than further theological speech.
