Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna speaks as one born and placed in the world, yet afraid of standing there without true covering. If he remains inwardly unformed, he becomes a cause for laughter.
He therefore asks Hara to place him in Shiva’s garment. This garment is not ordinary cloth. It is the true way in which the seeker must be established.
Basavanna says he has lost the path and asks to be shown the garment. He cries out before the Ganas and turns to Kudalasangama Deva for protection.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The first image is being born and placed in the world. Basavanna sees himself as set within human life, not apart from it.
The second image is laughter. It shows the shame of being placed in the world without inner truth.
The third image is Shiva’s garment. The garment is the covering of the Shiva-path, the way by which the seeker becomes rightly established.
The fourth image is the lost path. Basavanna does not claim that he already knows how to stand rightly. He asks to be shown.
The fifth image is the cry before the Ganas. He does not hide his condition. He calls openly for witness and help.
Together, these images show the need for true establishment. Birth into the world is not enough; the seeker must be clothed in Shiva’s way and protected by Kudalasangama Deva.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana warns against outer placement without inner establishment. To stand in the world is not the same as being grounded in the Shiva-path.
The garment-image shows that practice must become true covering. The seeker must not merely appear placed; he must be made fit to stand.
The practical movement here is open confession. Basavanna admits that he has lost the way and asks Kudalasangama Deva to show and protect him.
Editorial Commentary
This vachana should be read as a prayer for authentic grounding. Basavanna does not ask for outward honor. He asks to be clothed in Shiva’s way, because without that covering, worldly placement becomes exposure.
