Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna says that Devaloka and Martyaloka are not separate places to be seen elsewhere. They are known through speech and conduct.
Speaking truth is Devaloka. Speaking falsehood is Martyaloka. Right conduct is Svarga. Wrong conduct is Naraka.
Kudalasangama Deva is the measure. Basavanna therefore places heaven, mortal condition, and hell within the truth or falseness of speech and the rightness or wrongness of conduct.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The first contrast is Devaloka and Martyaloka. Basavanna does not treat them as distant regions. He brings them into lived speech.
The second image is truthful speech. Truthful speech is called Devaloka because it places the speaker in the field of Divine nearness.
The third image is false speech. False speech is called Martyaloka because it belongs to the condition of ordinary mortality, instability, and untruth.
The fourth image is Achara. Right conduct is called Svarga. Conduct itself becomes the place of ascent when it is aligned.
The fifth image is Anachara. Wrong conduct is called Naraka. Misconduct itself becomes the fall.
The final image is Kudalasangama Deva as the measure. Truth, falsehood, conduct, and misconduct are not measured by social approval. Kudalasangama Deva is the standard before whom they stand.
Together, these contrasts show that spiritual geography is lived through speech and conduct. Truthful speech and right conduct are not merely paths to another state; they are themselves the state Basavanna names.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana makes speech and conduct the immediate field of practice. One does not wait for another world to know the fruit of truth or falsehood.
The practitioner’s speech reveals the state of alignment. Conduct reveals whether the path is being lived or broken.
The practical movement here is direct accountability. Basavanna asks the seeker to let speech become truthful and conduct become right before Kudalasangama Deva.
Editorial Commentary
This vachana should be read as a precise correction of deferred spirituality. Basavanna does not allow heaven and hell to remain only future destinations. He places them in the present condition of speech and conduct.
