Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna asks why a Sharana should hold the imagined distinction of Ashtami and Navami.
Such mistaken observance misses the available opportunity and becomes distant from the Linga. What should remain in direct relation to Linga is diverted into constructed distinctions of time.
Basavanna then questions foolish people who become partial to one and seek to please another. Before Kudalasangama Deva, such divided movement has no wisdom.

The Ganapadavi missed opportunity and distance from Linga show the consequence. When the seeker turns toward calculated observance, the direct nearness of Linga is neglected.
The phrase about becoming for one and pleasing another shows divided allegiance. One direction is claimed, but another is served.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches that the seeker should not become dependent on imagined distinctions of time while moving away from Linga.
For Prasadi Sthala, the teaching is that grace is not received through divided calculation. The Sharana must remain directly oriented to Linga, without scattering through partiality, timing, or external pleasing.
Editorial Commentary
The words Ashtami and Navami should be retained as Basavanna’s own examples of imagined sacred distinction.
The phrase “misses the available opportunity” should replace any uncertain technical expansion. The point is that the Sharana loses what is already available by turning toward constructed observance.
Why wait for sacred time, when time itself arises within the Sacred? When division ends, the Sharana does not need imagined separation between one day and another in order to stand before Linga.
The final criticism is directed toward divided conduct: becoming attached to one and trying to please another. Basavanna calls such people foolish before Kudalasangama Deva.
