Vachana 174 — The Eternal Now of Devotion

Summary

Basavanna says: do not speak of yesterday and tomorrow as something separate. In this very day, become one who says, “Shiva Sharane.” In this very day, become one who says, “Hara Sharane.”

He then gives the final measure: in this very day, remember our Kudalasangama without lapse. The teaching is direct: refuge and remembrance are not to be postponed into another time. The seeker must stand as Sharana now, in the present day itself.

Imagery & Symbolic Relevance

Yesterday and tomorrow are the first terms rejected. Basavanna does not allow the seeker to live by what has passed or by what is yet to come.

“This very day” is the repeated center of the vachana. It is not merely a date or calendar unit. It is the immediate field in which refuge must be taken.

“Shiva Sharane” is the first form of the present-day vow. The seeker must not delay surrender; he must become Shiva’s Sharana now.

“Hara Sharane” repeats and deepens the same movement. The second name does not create a separate teaching; it reinforces the immediacy of refuge.

The remembrance of Kudalasangama is the final movement. Basavanna does not end with speech alone. The one who says “Shiva Sharane” and “Hara Sharane” must also remember Kudalasangama without lapse.

The force of the vachana lies in this compression of time. Past and future are set aside, and today itself becomes the place of refuge and remembrance.

Lingayoga

In Lingayoga, the relevance of this vachana lies in the movement given by the source: the seeker is not to depend on yesterday or tomorrow, but must stand this very day as Shiva’s Sharana and Hara’s Sharana, remembering Kudalasangama without lapse.

The practice-point is direct: do not postpone refuge. Let this day itself become the field of Sharana-bhava and uninterrupted remembrance.

Supporting Vachana

Pranalingi Sthala Vachana 498 — The Breath of Remembrance

Pranalingi Vachana 498 supports this vachana by making remembrance the measure of life itself. There, remembrance of Kudalasangama Deva is dawn, life, and prana, while forgetfulness is sunset. Sharana Vachana 174 carries that teaching into the present day: do not speak of yesterday or tomorrow; become Shiva’s Sharana and Hara’s Sharana this very day, and remember Kudalasangama without lapse. The support is direct: Pranalingi makes remembrance life; Sharana makes remembrance immediate.

Advancing Vachana

Aikya Sthala Vachana 1000 — Make Me Remain in Your Remembrance

Aikya Vachana 1000 advances this teaching by carrying present remembrance into total surrender through all conditions. In Sharana Vachana 174, Basavanna refuses delay and asks the seeker to remember Kudalasangama without lapse today itself. In Aikya Vachana 1000, movement, stillness, scattering, and loss of status may all occur, but the only essential prayer is that remembrance should not break. Thus the Sharana-stage immediacy of today advances into Aikya as unbroken remembrance through every condition before Kudalasangama Deva.
