Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna addresses the mind and asks whether it has forgotten the hardship of its birth.
He then gives three direct instructions: trust the Linga, trust the Jangama, and hold fast to Kudalasangama Deva without letting go.
The teaching is refuge through remembrance. The mind must not wander away from the supports that alone give direction.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The mind is the one being warned. Basavanna speaks to it directly because forgetfulness begins there.
The hardship of birth is the first image. Birth is not treated as a neutral event; it carries burden, vulnerability, and the danger of forgetting.
Trust in Linga is the first correction. The mind must place its confidence in the sacred center, not in its own wandering movement.
Trust in Jangama is the second correction. The mind must also trust living sacred presence, not only inward symbol.
Holding fast to Kudalasangama Deva completes the movement. The mind is told not to release its refuge.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana gives a practical discipline for the mind: remember, trust, and hold.
The practice-point is direct: when the mind forgets its condition, return it to Linga, Jangama, and Kudalasangama Deva.
For Sharana Sthala, this is steadfast refuge.
Editorial Commentary
The phrase concerning birth should be kept close to the Kannada as hardship, abasement, or burden of birth. It should not be expanded into a broad cosmology unless separately clarified. The vachana’s force lies in its direct commands to the mind: trust Linga, trust Jangama, and do not let go of Kudalasangama Deva.
