Summary
Basavanna questions the value of sacred knowledge, light, and worship when they do not produce inward transformation. If iron knows the alchemical principle but does not become gold, what use is that alchemy? If a lamp is present in the house but darkness is not removed, what use is that lamp?
The same test is then applied to worship. If one worships Kudalasangama Deva with the mind, yet karma does not fall away, what use is that worship? The vachana does not reject knowledge, light, or worship. It rejects their incompletion when they remain without effect.
The Sharana-stage concern is therefore direct: the measure of worship is transformation. Sacred acts must remove darkness, alter the inner substance, and loosen karmic bondage. If nothing changes within, the form of worship remains present, but its fruit has not appeared.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The first image is iron and alchemical knowing. Iron may know or come near the alchemical principle, but if it does not become gold, the knowledge has not fulfilled its purpose. Basavanna uses this image to show that contact with sacred truth is not enough. The seeker must be changed by it.
Gold is the sign of completed transformation. It is not merely decoration placed upon iron, but a changed condition. In the same way, devotion must not remain as information, speech, ritual familiarity, or nearness to teaching. It must alter the inner being.
The second image is the lamp in the house. A lamp exists to remove darkness. If darkness remains inside the house, the lamp has not done what it is meant to do. Basavanna’s question is severe because the object is present, but its purpose remains unfulfilled.
The darkness inside the house points to the inner condition that worship must illumine. The issue is not the absence of religious form, but the persistence of obscurity despite that form. The lamp’s presence becomes meaningful only when darkness is actually removed.
The final image is worship of Kudalasangama Deva with the mind. This is not merely outer performance. Basavanna brings the test into inward worship itself. Even worship joined with the mind must be examined by its fruit.
The falling away of karma is the decisive measure. If karma remains unloosened, worship has not completed its work. The vachana therefore moves from transformation of iron, to removal of darkness, to dissolution of karma. Each image asks the same question: has the sacred act produced its proper result?
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches that worship must become effective inwardly. Knowledge must transform; light must illumine; worship must loosen bondage. The practitioner cannot rest in the presence of sacred means while their purpose remains unfulfilled.
For Sharana Sthala, the practice-point is clear: worship must not remain partial, decorative, or merely mental. It must touch the inner field deeply enough that darkness is removed and karma begins to fall away.
The Sharana does not measure worship by performance alone. The true measure is whether the worshipper is changed before Kudalasangama Deva. If iron remains iron, darkness remains darkness, and karma remains intact, Basavanna asks what use the sacred form has served.
Editorial Commentary
The vachana should be read through its three tests: iron must become gold, the lamp must remove darkness, and worship must dissolve karma. Basavanna’s critique is not against worship, but against worship without fruit. The force of the vachana lies in this practical spiritual measure: sacred form must produce inward effect.

Pranalingi Vachana 1096 supports this teaching by showing worship fulfilled inwardly. There, supreme bliss becomes the water for the Lord’s feet, the heart becomes the lotus, longing becomes ārati, inner illumination becomes incense, and svānubhava becomes fragrance; through such inward worship, Pranalinga becomes visible. This prepares Vachana 801 directly. If Vachana 1096 shows worship becoming inwardly alive, Vachana 801 warns that worship is useless when it does not transform the seeker, remove inner darkness, and loosen karma before Kudalasangama Deva.

Aikya Sthala Vachana 930 — The River of Equality
Aikya Vachana 930 advances this teaching by asking what fruit there is in worshipping the Linga if Samarati, Samakale, and Samasukha have not arisen, and if the devotee has not become like a river merging into a river. This is the Aikya-stage fulfillment of Vachana 801. In Sharana Vachana 801, worship is tested by whether it removes darkness and karma. In Aikya Vachana 930, worship is tested by whether it bears its final fruit: equality, harmony, shared bliss, and non-separate union in Kudalasangama Deva.
