Summary
Basavanna offers gratitude for the transforming grace of Madivala Machideva. The whole person is touched by that grace: the body is purified, the mind is made stainless, the inner being is illumined, and the outer life is opened.
The repeated naming of Madivala is central. Basavanna does not say that he purified himself, corrected himself, or made himself worthy through his own effort. Each transformation is attributed to Madivala. The realized Sharana becomes the active agent through whom grace works.
The final line gives the full meaning of the vachana. Madivala made Basavanna worthy of Kudalasangama Deva. Worthiness here is not social qualification, ritual status, or personal merit. It is spiritual fitness created through purification, clarity, illumination, and opened conduct.
Thus the vachana shows the Anga made worthy of Linga through the grace-bearing presence of Jangama. The seeker is not self-completed. He is made ready by the realized Sharana.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The first image is the purified body. The body is not dismissed as unworthy or irrelevant. It becomes a field capable of being purified. Madivala’s grace reaches embodied life itself.
The second image is the stainless mind. This carries the transformation inward. The mind’s stains—restlessness, self-claim, attachment, and obscuration—are not merely managed; they are cleansed through the living influence of the Sharana.
The third image is the illumined inner being. Purification is not only removal of impurity. It becomes light. The inner field is opened to clarity before Kudalasangama Deva.
The fourth image is the opened outer life. Basavanna does not stop with inward illumination. The outer life too is released, clarified, and made fit. This preserves the unity of inner realization and lived expression.
The final image is worthiness. Madivala does not merely advise or bless from a distance. He makes the seeker worthy. This is the fullest force of the vachana: the realized Sharana becomes the instrument through whom Kudalasangama Deva prepares the devotee for Himself.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches that transformation must reach the whole person. Body, mind, inner being, and outer life cannot remain separate fields. Each must be purified, clarified, illumined, and opened.
For Sharana Sthala, the practice-point is gratitude and receptivity before the realized Sharana. The seeker must not claim that he has made himself worthy. He receives the grace that purifies and prepares him.
The movement is from self-effort to received fitness. Madivala’s role is not ornamental. He stands as Jangama, the living presence through whom the Anga is made worthy of Linga.
Editorial Commentary
The repeated “Madivala” should remain central. The vachana’s rhythm is itself a confession of agency: he purified, he made stainless, he illumined, he opened, he made worthy. Any reading that turns this into self-made purification weakens the source.

Aikya Vachana 1135 advances this teaching by carrying the making-worthy of Vachana 1085 into fuller Divine establishment. There, Kudalasangama Deva removes the imagined, reveals the Unimagined, stills the mind, establishes the subtle Reality, fills the inner being with Great Knowledge, establishes righteous conduct outwardly, shows His true abode, and makes the devotee worthy of His Holy Feet. The fulfillment is shared abiding with Madivala in the Great House. This is the natural Aikya culmination of Vachana 1085. In Sharana Vachana 1085, Madivala makes Basavanna worthy of Kudalasangama Deva; in Aikya Vachana 1135, that worthiness flowers into abiding with Madivala in the Great House of grace and joy.
