Vachana 1118 — I Am Not a Teacher of Others

Summary

Basavanna refuses the claim of spiritual authority. He says he has never thought of becoming a teacher to anyone. This is not a rejection of truth, guidance, or Vachana. It is the refusal to stand as the owner of teaching.

He points instead to those who came before. They realized through their own direct experience and attained Nija-Linga-Aikya. Their realization was not borrowed speech, inherited status, or declared authority. It was lived and fulfilled.

Basavanna then makes the central confession: “I have done nothing.” He does not place himself above the realized ones. He walks behind those who have grasped the Truth.

The closing line makes the humility solemn. With the immortal hosts as witnesses, before Kudalasangama Deva, Basavanna will not speak a word as his own teaching before Chennabasavanna. Truth is not possessed. It is received, lived, and followed.

Imagery & Symbolic Relevance

The first image is the refusal to become a teacher. Basavanna does not reject instruction itself. He rejects the egoic posture that says, “I am the source from which others must receive.”

The second image is the ancient realized ones. Those who came before are not invoked as a list of names or a matter of prestige. They stand as the living measure of realized experience.

The phrase “through themselves they became” is important. It points to direct realization. The true ones did not become complete through mere speech, borrowed doctrine, or public role. They became what they knew.

Nija-Linga-Aikya is the central state named. The True Linga is not an idea to be taught from above. It is the reality into which the realized ones entered through Anubhava.

The confession “I have done nothing” removes personal achievement. Basavanna does not make humility a performance. He simply refuses to claim what belongs to grace, Guru, Sharana-lineage, and Kudalasangama Deva.

The image of walking behind those who grasped the Truth gives the vachana its practical posture. Basavanna does not stand in front as claimant. He follows. The one who follows rightly is safer than the one who leads through self-importance.

The immortal hosts as witnesses give the vachana solemnity. This is not a casual statement of modesty. Before Kudalasangama Deva and before Chennabasavanna, Basavanna refuses to turn sacred speech into personal possession.

Lingayoga

In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches humility before Anubhava. Speech, instruction, and sacred language must not replace lived realization.

For Sharana Sthala, the practice-point is direct: do not claim to teach what has not become realized life. Do not stand above those who have grasped the Truth. Walk behind them.

This also protects the seeker from spiritual vanity. The desire to instruct others can become a refined form of ego. Basavanna cuts that root by saying, “I have done nothing,” and by placing himself before Kudalasangama Deva as one who follows the realized.

Supporting Vachana

Pranalingi Sthala Vachana 979 — Without Experience, Nothing Ripens

Pranalingi Vachana 979 supports this teaching by placing Anubhava at the center of spiritual life. It says that Bhakti without Anubhava does not truly arrive, Linga without Anubhava does not reach Samarasasukha, Prasada without Anubhava does not give transforming effect, and without Anubhava nothing can be rightly known. This prepares Vachana 1118 directly. In Vachana 979, words, association, and sacred realities must ripen into direct experience; in Vachana 1118, Basavanna refuses to stand as a teacher by claim and instead follows those who have realized Nija-Linga through their own Anubhava.

Advancing Vachana

Aikya Sthala Vachana 1011 — Beyond Knowing, Beyond Thought

Aikya Vachana 1011 advances this teaching by carrying humility before Anubhava into the final inadequacy of all claims. There, Basavanna says that if he claims to have known, remembered, or contemplated the Linga, it lies beyond each claim; the Linga beyond word, mind, and expression is known only through the Guru’s showing, and the Self-radiant Linga arises through the churning of Guru and disciple. This is the natural Aikya fulfillment of Vachana 1118. In Sharana Vachana 1118, Basavanna refuses to speak teaching as his own and walks behind those who grasped Truth; in Aikya Vachana 1011, even knowing, remembering, and contemplation fall silent before the Guru’s showing and the establishment of the True Abode in Kudalasangama Deva.
