Vachana 562- Beyond the Crowded Gods

Summary

In this vachana, Basavanna lists many objects treated as gods: pot-god, tree-god, street-stone god, banana-cluster god, twig-god, measuring-vessel god, and others.

He says that with gods named everywhere, there is no space even to place the foot. The problem is not the world itself, but the crowding of devotion through many object-bound claims.

Basavanna ends with a clear declaration: there is only one God, Kudalasangama Deva.

Imagery & Symbolic Relevance

The pot, tree, street stone, banana cluster, twig, and measuring vessel are ordinary objects made into deities through naming and custom.

The crowded field of gods shows scattered devotion. When everything is separately named as god, the seeker loses clear direction.

“No space even for one foot” is the central image. Multiplicity has become obstruction.

Basavanna does not remain in that crowd. He resolves the matter in one declaration: Kudalasangama Deva alone is God.

Lingayoga

In Lingayoga, this vachana turns the seeker from scattered outward dependence toward one-pointed recognition of Kudalasangama Deva.

For Prasadi Sthala, the teaching is that receiving grace requires clarity. Devotion must not be dispersed among countless object-bound claims. It must stand in the one Lord.

Editorial Commentary

This vachana should not be expanded into a general rejection of creation. Basavanna’s concern is the multiplication of object-deities without clear recognition of the one God.

The list of objects should remain simple and direct. Each item shows how easily ordinary things can become separate centers of worship.

The closing line gives the measure of the whole vachana: Kudalasangama Deva alone is God.

Supporting Vachana

Maheshwara Sthala Vachana 952 — The Many Openings, the One Abode

Maheshwara Vachana 952 supports this vachana by distinguishing many visible openings from one abode. In Vachana 562, Basavanna lists many object-gods and then declares Kudalasangama Deva alone as God. In Vachana 952, many openings are not the source; the abode is one.

Advancing Vachana

Pranalingi Sthala Vachana 548 — The Uncaused Beyond All Names

Pranalingi Vachana 548 advances this teaching by questioning name-bound certainty and pointing beyond exalted divine names toward the uncaused source. In Vachana 562, Basavanna rejects the crowding of many object-gods and declares one Kudalasangama Deva. In Vachana 548, the movement is carried forward by not resting finally even in sacred names without realizing their source.
