Vachana 983-  The Rudrakshi as the Path of Liberation

Summary

In this vachana, Basavanna speaks of Rudrakshi as the complete aid on the path of liberation.

For him, Rudrakshi is all purification. Rudrakshi is the cause of all. Rudrakshi is every means of practice. Rudrakshi is every attainment. Rudrakshi is the destruction of all sin.

He then says that Kudalasangama Deva’s five faces have become the five-faced Rudrakshis.

For Basavanna’s path of liberation, Sri Maha Rudrakshi itself has become the means.

The teaching is that Rudrakshi is not treated here as an outer ornament alone. It is a sacred means that gathers purification, practice, attainment, sin-destruction, and liberation into one form of remembrance before Kudalasangama Deva.

Imagery & Symbolic Relevance

The vachana is built through repetition: “For me, Rudrakshi is…”

This repetition shows total trust in the Rudrakshi as a spiritual means. Basavanna does not present it as decoration or status. He presents it as a path-bearing aid.

First, Rudrakshi is Sarva-Pavana, all purification. It stands for cleansing the seeker from inner impurity and forgetfulness.

Second, Rudrakshi is Sarva-Karana, the cause of all. Here it is not a separate cause apart from Kudalasangama Deva, but a sacred sign that turns the seeker toward the source.

Third, Rudrakshi is Sarva-Sadhana, every means of practice. It gathers the path into remembrance, discipline, and inward orientation.

Fourth, Rudrakshi is Sarva-Siddhi, every attainment. This should not be reduced to worldly success. Its true attainment is movement toward liberation.

Fifth, Rudrakshi is Sarva-Papa-Kshaya, the destruction of all sin. Its power lies in keeping the seeker turned toward Kudalasangama Deva.

The five faces of Kudalasangama Deva become the five-faced Rudrakshis. This links the bead directly with the Lord’s own sacred form. The Rudrakshi is therefore not independent; it has meaning because it carries the remembrance of Kudalasangama Deva.

Lingayoga

In Lingayoga, sacred symbols are not to be worn mechanically.

Rudrakshi becomes meaningful when it holds the seeker in remembrance, purity, discipline, and surrender. If it becomes only an outward mark, its living force is lost.

For Prasadi Sthala, the teaching is important. The Rudrakshi is received as a means of grace. It purifies, steadies, and directs the seeker toward Mukti.

Basavanna’s emphasis is personal and direct: “For me…” The Rudrakshi is not used for display before others. It is the means for his own liberation-path before Kudalasangama Deva.

Editorial Commentary

The Kannada vachana  repeats “Ayya, for me Rudrakshi is…” before each quality. This repetition should be preserved in meaning, because it shows Basavanna’s complete dependence on Rudrakshi as a sacred means.

Sarva-Pavana means all purification. Sarva-Karana means the cause of all. Sarva-Sadhana means every means of practice. Sarva-Siddhi means every attainment. Sarva-Papa-Kshaya means the destruction of all sin.

Panchavaktra means the five-faced form of the Lord. Panchamukha Rudrakshi means the five-faced Rudrakshi. Basavanna joins the two directly.

The final line should remain centered on Mukti. Sri Maha Rudrakshi becomes the means for Basavanna’s liberation-path.

Supporting Vachana

Bhakta Sthala Vachana 1363 — The Taste of Your Name

Bhakta Vachana 1363 supports this vachana by saying that the mantras “Shiva, Shiva” and “Hara, Hara” become nectar-food, and that Vibhuti, Rudrakshi, and Bhakti become the means for Mukti.

In Vachana 983, Rudrakshi alone is praised as purification, practice, attainment, sin-destruction, and the means for liberation. Both vachanas show that Rudrakshi is not an ornament of identity but a sacred aid joined to remembrance and liberation.

Advancing Vachana

Pranalingi Sthala Vachana 178 — The Steady Hand of Remembrance

Pranalingi Vachana 178 advances this teaching by showing that when the mind forgets remembrance, Maya enters; but when Kudalasangama Deva is remembered, sin melts away like camphor in flame.

In Vachana 983, Rudrakshi is the means for purification and the destruction of sin on the path to Mukti. In Vachana 178, this matures into Pranalingi steadiness: remembrance itself becomes the living force that dissolves sin and restores the seeker to Kudalasangama Deva.
