Vachana 974- The Inner Worship of the Eternal Linga

Summary

In this vachana, Basavanna transforms the whole sequence of Linga worship into inner worship.

The ground is Sadachara and Satkriya, right conduct and good action. Upon it, he brings the purity called Sarva-Shuddha. With the water of humility, he cleanses the place. He removes the defects of the body and prepares the inner worship-space.

He fills the inexhaustible vessel with the water of supreme bliss. He offers the flower called the lotus of the heart. He applies the fragrance of peaceful happiness. He places the imperishable Akshate. He offers the incense of Sadbhava, true inner feeling. He raises the lamp of right knowledge. He waves the light of eternal stainlessness. He rings the bell of Brahmanada.

Knowing the inner secret and working-state of this worship, one may perform Shiva-Lingarchane. Basavanna says that in the mortal world, he sees no one else fit for this. To perform the worship of Shiva-Linga for Prabhu Kudalasangama Deva, he himself is the attendant.

Imagery & Symbolic Relevance

The vachana follows the order of ritual worship, but each ritual object is given an inward meaning.

The ground is Sadachara and Satkriya. Worship must stand upon right conduct and good action. Without this ground, the worship has no proper place.

The cleansing substance is Sarva-Shuddha, complete purity. The water used for cleansing is Vinaya, humility. This shows that inner worship begins with purity and humility, not with display.

The defects of the body are swept away. The worship-space is cleared. Basavanna prepares not an outer courtyard alone, but the field of embodied life.

The inexhaustible vessel is filled with Paramananda, supreme bliss. Bliss becomes the water of worship.

The heart-lotus becomes the flower. Peaceful happiness becomes fragrance. The imperishable becomes Akshate. Sadbhava, true inner feeling, becomes incense.

Sujnana, right knowledge, becomes the lamp. Nitya-Niranjana, eternal stainlessness, becomes the waving of light. Brahmanada, the primordial sound of the all-pervading divine resonance, becomes the bell.

The whole worship is therefore inwardly fulfilled. Basavanna does not reject ritual form. He shows the inner state that must correspond to each form.

Lingayoga

In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches that Linga worship must become inner alignment.

The worshipper must not depend only on external materials. Conduct, humility, bodily purification, bliss, heart, peace, true feeling, knowledge, stainlessness, and sacred sound must become the materials of worship.

For Prasadi Sthala, this is especially important. Prasada is not only received after ritual; it is prepared through the transformation of the worshipper’s whole being.

When the inner materials are present, Linga worship becomes living worship. The seeker does not merely perform before Kudalasangama Deva. The seeker becomes the attendant of the worship itself.

Editorial Commentary

The Kannada vachana  gives a detailed sequence of inner ritual. The order should be preserved: ground, purification, humility-water, removal of bodily defects, inexhaustible vessel, supreme bliss, heart-lotus, peace-fragrance, imperishable Akshate, true-feeling incense, right-knowledge lamp, eternal-stainless light, Brahmanada bell, and daily Linga worship.

Sadachara means right conduct. Satkriya means good or sacred action. Vinaya means humility. Sadbhava means true inner feeling. Sujnana means right knowledge. Nitya-Niranjana means eternal stainlessness.

The phrase “secret and working-state” of this worship should be understood as the inner principle by which external ritual becomes true worship.

The central teaching is that Shiva-Lingarchane is fulfilled only when the ritual forms are matched by inner transformation.

Maheshwara Sthala Vachana 978 — Beyond Mechanical Worship

Maheshwara Vachana 978 supports this vachana by showing that repeated outer worship, bathing, anointing, and calling aloud do not reach Kudalasangama Deva when inward awareness remains darkened and the living Jangama is neglected.

In Vachana 974, Basavanna does not reject worship; he interiorizes it. He shows that every element of worship must arise from conduct, humility, knowledge, true feeling, peace, bliss, and stainlessness. Both vachanas teach that worship becomes true only when it is inwardly alive.

Advancing Vachana

Pranalingi Sthala Vachana 1096 — The Worship of the Inner Lotus

Pranalingi Vachana 1096 advances this teaching by presenting inner worship as the direct worship of Prana-Linga: supreme bliss becomes water, the heart becomes the lotus, yearning becomes light, illumination becomes incense, and direct experience becomes sacred perfume.

In Vachana 974, the whole ritual order is inwardly transformed for Shiva-Lingarchane. In Vachana 1096, this matures into Pranalingi realization: the devotee’s own inner states become the worship, and the mystery of Prana-Linga is directly beheld.
