Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna compares his mind to a monkey climbing a tree and leaping from branch to branch.
Such a mind cannot be trusted. It moves constantly, refuses to settle, and cannot become a stable ground for devotion.
Basavanna’s sorrow is that this restless mind does not allow him to remain with Kudalasangama Deva. The teaching is direct: nearness to the Divine cannot be held by a mind that keeps leaping away.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The monkey is the central image. It represents movement without rest, impulse without steadiness, and attention without rootedness.
The tree gives the field of movement. Its branches are many, and the monkey moves from one to another without staying.
Basavanna applies this to the mind. It passes from thought to thought, desire to desire, and concern to concern. Its instability makes it unreliable.
The question “How shall I trust it?” shows that the seeker has stopped treating the mind as a dependable guide.
The final line gives the image its force: the mind prevents him from staying with Kudalasangama Deva. Restlessness is therefore not a minor weakness; it interrupts abiding.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, the mind must become capable of remaining before the Linga. A scattered mind cannot sustain remembrance.
This vachana asks the practitioner to recognize mental restlessness without excuse. The monkey-mind must first be seen clearly before it can be stilled.
The obstacle is not only outer distraction. It is the mind’s habit of leaving the sacred center.
Practice matures when attention stops leaping and learns to remain where devotion is nourished.
Editorial Commentary
This vachana should be read as an exposure of mental instability.
The teaching is direct: the mind that cannot stay cannot abide in Kudalasangama Deva.

Vachana 31 — The Coconut and the Dog
Vachana 31 shows that sacred truth remains unopened when the receiver lacks readiness. Vachana 33 shows one cause of that unreadiness: the mind cannot remain steady enough to receive.

Maheshwara Vachana 32 — From Monkey to Bee
The monkey-like restlessness of Vachana 33 advances into Maheshwara Vachana 32, where the seeker prays to become like a bee at the lotus feet of Kudalasangama Deva. What leaps from branch to branch must become capable of staying where nectar is found.
