Summary
Basavanna begins with the image of a pearl born in water. Though water is its source, once the pearl has formed, it cannot become water again.
He applies this to the Bhakta who has received Guru-karunya. After grace has been received, returning to the former state is no ordinary lapse. It becomes betrayal of Guru, Linga, Jangama, Achara, and Prasada.
The warning is severe: if these five sacred relations are not truly known and lived, the seeker falls into ruin before Kudalasangama Deva.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The pearl is the governing image. It arises from water, yet once formed, it does not return to water. In the same way, the seeker transformed by Guru’s grace must not fall back into the old condition.
Guru-karunya marks entrance into the path. Once this grace is received, the seeker becomes responsible to the five supports of spiritual life: Guru, Linga, Jangama, Achara, and Prasada.
Basavanna names the failure as fivefold droha. Guru-droha betrays guidance. Linga-droha betrays the living relation to Linga. Jangama-droha fails before the moving sacred presence. Achara-droha abandons right conduct. Prasada-droha violates received grace.
The distinction between Bhakta and Bhavi sharpens the teaching. The Bhavi has not yet entered this sacred relation, but the Bhakta has. Therefore reversal after grace becomes grave.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches continuity after grace. Guru, Linga, Jangama, Achara, and Prasada cannot be treated as separate or optional.
For Pranalingi Sthala, Guru-karunya must become inward steadiness. The seeker must not return to old habit after receiving grace.
The practice-point is direct: remain faithful to the sacred relations already received, and let them become conduct, awareness, and offering before Kudalasangama Deva.
Editorial Commentary
The pearl image should govern the entry. Basavanna is speaking of transformation that should not be reversed.
“Droha” should remain strong as betrayal of sacred relation. The fivefold repetition shows that the fall breaks the devotee’s relation to the whole path.

Sharana Sthala Vachana 1165 — Without Achara, Nothing Sacred Remains
Sharana Vachana 1165 advances this teaching by making Achara the standard for all sacred relations. Without right conduct, Guru-initiation, Linga-worship, Jangama-reception, Padodaka, and Prasada lose their truth.
In Vachana 768, Basavanna warns against returning to the former state after Guru’s grace. In Vachana 1165, this becomes Sharana discipline: sacred forms remain living only when sustained by Achara before Kudalasangama Deva.
