Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna compares the work of Kudalasangama Deva to the work of a potter. Clay does not become a vessel by remaining as it is. It is worked through water, shaping, drying, and fire.
The Lord gives the coolness of water, shapes the material by the cord and wheel, dries it through air, and places it before the mouth of fire. Through these stages, what was once raw becomes another vessel.
The teaching is that transformation requires process. Softening alone is not enough, shaping alone is not enough, drying alone is not enough; the vessel becomes complete only after passing through fire.
The spiritual concern placed before Kudalasangama Deva is therefore formation through Divine working. The seeker is shaped, steadied, dried, and fired until a new condition emerges.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The first image is the potter’s work. The potter does not merely touch the clay; he works it through a sequence. This shows that transformation is not accidental or instant.
The second image is the coolness of water. Water softens the clay and makes it workable. Without this softening, shaping cannot begin.
The third image is the cord and wheel. These represent the act of shaping. The clay must be turned, cut, drawn, and formed. The emerging vessel receives shape through pressure and movement.
The fourth image is drying in the air. Even after shaping, the vessel is not ready. It must lose excess softness and become steady enough to endure the next stage.
The fifth image is the mouth of fire. Fire completes what water, wheel, cord, and air have prepared. The fire does not destroy the vessel; it hardens and transforms it.
The final image is another vessel. Basavanna says that after this process, it is known as a different vessel. The source emphasizes real transformation: the material has passed through stages and has become something new.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches that inward formation occurs through ordered transformation. The seeker should not resist every pressure, drying, or fire as punishment. Some workings are part of the Lord’s shaping.
For Pranalingi Sthala, the point is direct. Life must become capable of holding the Linga inwardly. The seeker is not merely softened by grace; he is shaped, steadied, tested, and transformed before Kudalasangama Deva.
The practice-point is clear: accept the stages of formation. Let softening, shaping, drying, and fire do their work. What emerges after Divine working is not the same unformed condition with which the process began.
Editorial Commentary
The potter-image should remain central, and its teaching lies in the sequence itself: water makes workable, the cord and wheel shape, air steadies, fire completes, and another vessel appears. Kudalasangama Deva is the one who performs this shaping.

Prasadi Sthala Vachana 152 — The Crucible of Fire
Prasadi Vachana 152 supports this teaching by showing that true sacred contact must transform the one who receives it. Iron does not become gold by nearness alone; transformation occurs only through real contact, receiving, compliance, and self-offering before Kudalasangama Deva.
Vachana 1250 carries this into Pranalingi Sthala through the potter’s process. The seeker is softened by water, shaped by cord and wheel, steadied by air, and completed through fire until another vessel emerges. What Prasadi 152 teaches as transformation through true receiving becomes, here, the Divine formation by which Kudalasangama Deva makes the seeker into a new vessel.

Sharana Sthala Vachana 1085 — Made Worthy Through Madivala
Sharana Vachana 1085 advances this teaching by showing transformation completed through realized Sharana-grace. Madivala purifies the body, makes the mind stainless, illumines the inner being, opens the outer life, and makes the seeker worthy of Kudalasangama Deva.
In Vachana 1250, Basavanna presents Kudalasangama Deva as the potter who works the clay through water, shaping, air, and fire until it becomes another vessel. In Vachana 1085, this matures into Sharana Sthala as complete purification of the whole person. The vessel shaped and fired by Divine working becomes the body, mind, inner being, and outer life made worthy through Madivala’s grace before Kudalasangama Deva.
