Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna presents truth as the substance that fills the vessel. A life filled with truth does not remain empty, divided, or available to falsehood.
The mind must then be poured carefully, carefully, like a steady stream. Truth must not be held as an idea while the mind flows carelessly elsewhere.
The Sharanas of Kudalasangama do not hold false treasure, nor do they walk into untruth. Their life is filled and directed by truth itself.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The vessel is the first image. It stands for the human field that must be filled rightly. What fills it determines its worth.
Truth is the treasure that fills the vessel. Basavanna does not treat truth as ornament or speech alone. Truth must become the real content of life.
The repeated instruction “carefully, carefully” gives the discipline. The mind is not to be scattered, spilled, or agitated. It must be directed with steadiness.
The stream is the image of such direction. A broken flow cannot preserve purity. A steady flow keeps the mind aligned with what fills it.
The false treasure is the contrast. It may appear valuable, but it does not belong in the vessel of truth. The Sharanas do not hold it because their measure has already changed.
Together, the images teach that the Sharana’s truth is not occasional. The vessel is filled, the mind flows steadily, and the path does not turn toward falsehood.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana asks the seeker to become fit to hold truth. Awareness must not only recognize truth; it must maintain continuity.
The practice-point is direct: guard the flow of the mind. Let it move steadily in truth, not in distraction or false value.
For Sharana Sthala, this is truth-bearing life. The Sharana does not merely speak truth, but becomes a vessel from which truth flows into conduct.
Editorial Commentary
The vessel should be understood as the field of life that must hold truth without mixture. The phrase “carefully, carefully” should remain central, because it shows that truth requires vigilance. “False treasure” should not be expanded into a separate social catalogue; it simply refers to whatever appears valuable but is not rooted in satya.

Supporting Vachana
Pranalingi Sthala Vachana 603 — Beyond Measure — The Exposure of False Purity
Pranalingi Vachana 603 supports this teaching by showing that a vessel must be inwardly fit for what is placed in it. Sacred procedure alone cannot purify an unfit vessel. Vachana 238 gives the Sharana form of this principle: the vessel must be filled with truth, and the mind must be poured steadily so that falsehood does not enter. Both vachanas require inner fitness before Kudalasangama Deva.
Advancing Vachana
Aikya Sthala Vachana 286 — The Indivisible Trinity
Aikya Vachana 286 advances this teaching through the image of devotion flowing like a steady vessel-stream. In Vachana 238, the mind must be poured carefully in truth, and the Sharanas do not hold false treasure. In Aikya Vachana 286, that steady flow becomes undivided devotion within Linga, Jangama, and Prasada. Thus the Sharana-stage vessel of truth advances into Aikya as continuous, single-flowing awareness before Kudalasangama Deva.
