Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna first places the Sharanas beyond ordinary measure. They are greater than all because their worth is not decided by rank, ritual standing, social judgment, or external comparison.
He then gives a severe image: what value is there in cooking food in a dog’s skull? The act may look like preparation, but the vessel itself is unfit. A sacred claim cannot make an impure vessel pure.
Basavanna then asks what Agama could justify such an act. He finally recalls Kudalasangama Deva’s word: food seen by the bhavi does not become Linga-offered. The teaching is direct: Linga-offering depends on inward fitness, not external handling alone.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The first image is the greatness of the Sharanas. Basavanna says they are superior to all. This is not superiority of status, but a measure beyond outer qualification.
The cooking vessel is the next image. A vessel receives and prepares. If the vessel is unfit, what is placed in it cannot become pure by procedure alone.
The dog’s skull is the sharpest image in the vachana. Basavanna uses it to expose contradiction between sacred intention and unfit condition.
The Agama question deepens the correction. Basavanna does not allow sacred authority to cover inward impurity.
The quoted saying about bhavi-seen food gives the decisive standard. What is touched by unawakened seeing does not automatically become fit for Linga. Offering is not a label; it must be inwardly worthy.
Kudalasangama Deva remains the final witness. The true measure of purity, offering, and Sharana-worth stands before Him.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches that Linga-offering depends on inner fitness. A sacred act is not made true by name, rule, vessel, or procedure alone.
For Pranalingi Sthala, the concern is inward purity and living relation to Linga. The seeker must not assume that outward preparation or religious language is enough. The inner vessel must be made fit.
The practice-point is direct: examine the vessel before claiming the offering. If the mind, speech, conduct, and vision remain unpurified, the offering cannot be called complete before Kudalasangama Deva.
Editorial Commentary
The dog’s skull image should not be softened. Its force lies in showing contradiction between sacred intention and unfit vessel.
The Agama question should remain central. Basavanna does not permit scripture or religious rule to become a cover for inward impurity.
The final quoted saying gives the standard: Linga-offering is not established by outward act alone. The one who offers, the condition of offering, and the relation to Linga must be true.

Supporting Vachana
Prasadi Sthala Vachana 657 — True Nobility Is Linga-Bhakti
Prasadi Vachana 657 supports this vachana by rejecting outer qualification as the measure of spiritual worth. There, Basavanna says that even one born as a Shvapacha becomes truly noble if that person is a Linga-Bhakta. He then asks what use there is in building, touching, or offering if the mind itself remains untouched.
Vachana 603 carries this Prasadi teaching into Pranalingi Sthala by exposing false purity through the unfit vessel. What Prasadi 657 says about the untouched mind becomes here the rule that bhavi-seen food does not become Linga-offered. Thus Linga-offering depends on inward fitness before Kudalasangama Deva.
Advancing Vachana
Sharana Sthala Vachana 627 — Dishonoring the Sharana — The Fall into Ignorance
Sharana Vachana 627 advances this teaching by showing that scripture, learning, offering, and Linga-worship remain incomplete when the living truth of the Sharana is not recognized. To know scripture is not to know Truth; to perform devotion is not to live Bhakti; to worship Linga while rejecting Sharana is to choose symbol over awakening.
In Vachana 603, Basavanna exposes false purity through the dog’s skull, the Agama question, and the rule that bhavi-seen food is not Linga-offered. In Vachana 627, this matures into Sharana Sthala as the fuller warning that outer religion without realized presence becomes imitation of wisdom. Thus Pranalingi inward fitness advances into Sharana recognition of living truth before Kudalasangama Deva.
