Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna addresses the mind directly: when it stands before the Lord, it must not behave like a thief.
The mind carries the burden of becoming. Therefore it must become disciplined, reverent, and free from arrogance.
The final instruction is to take refuge and live humbly among Kudalasangama’s Sharanas, seeing the way of Bhakti there.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The mind is the one being corrected. Basavanna does not speak outwardly first; he turns the instruction inward.
The thief is the sharpest image. A thief hides, evades, and fears exposure. The mind must not approach the Lord in that condition.
The burden of becoming shows why honesty is necessary. The mind is not free of weight, so it should not pretend lightness.
Discipline, reverent fear, and absence of arrogance form the required conduct. These are not ornaments of devotion; they are the mind’s proper posture before Kudalasangama Deva.
The Sharanas give the final field. Among them, the mind must see Bhakti and live as a humble servant.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches inward truthfulness. The mind must be watched before it is allowed to claim devotion.
The practice-point is direct: do not hide, do not become arrogant, and do not treat the burden of becoming lightly. Take refuge where Bhakti is lived among Kudalasangama Deva’s Sharanas.
For Sharana Sthala, this is disciplined humility of the mind.
Editorial Commentary
The thief-image should remain central because it defines the danger of hidden inward falseness. “Burden of becoming” should be kept close to the Kannada and need not be expanded into a long theory. The instruction is practical: become disciplined, reverent, non-arrogant, and live humbly among the Sharanas.

Supporting Vachana
Pranalingi Sthala Vachana 178 — The Steady Hand of Remembrance
Pranalingi Vachana 178 supports this teaching through the image of the thief entering when the hand loses its hold and the mind forgets Kudalasangama Deva. Vachana 275 gives the Sharana form of that vigilance: the mind must not be thief-like before the Lord, but must live in disciplined refuge among Kudalasangama’s Sharanas.
Advancing Vachana
Aikya Sthala Vachana 941 — See the Sahaja Sharana
Aikya Vachana 941 advances this teaching by showing the mature Sharana as one who is not a deceiver of body or life, but stands in uninterrupted Sahaja before Kudalasangama Deva. Vachana 275 begins with the mind warned not to hide like a thief; Aikya Vachana 941 shows the completed state where such deception has ended.
