Vachana 336 — The Son in the House of Sharanas

Summary

In this vachana, Basavanna refuses to call himself a Bhakta. He says he is only a wearer of disguise.

He then names the harsh labels attached to him: Kātuga, Kētuga, and Pōluga. These names do not become his final identity.

Before Kudalasangama Deva, he gives the true relation: he is the son in the house of the Lord’s Sharanas.

Imagery & Symbolic Relevance

The denial “I am not a Bhakta” is the first movement. Basavanna does not claim devotion as a title.

The wearer of disguise is the central self-image. It shows outer form without full inward truth.

The three names — Kātuga, Kētuga, and Pōluga — form the field of reproach. They are the names by which he is seen or accused, but they do not settle the truth of his belonging.

The house of the Sharanas gives the corrective image. A house is not merely a place; it is the field where one belongs, is shaped, and is known.

The son in that house is the final identity. Basavanna does not claim mastery. He claims childlike belonging among Kudalasangama Deva’s Sharanas.

Lingayoga

In Lingayoga, this vachana tests the difference between title, appearance, and belonging.

The practice-point is direct: do not depend on the name Bhakta, do not hide behind a spiritual role, and do not be ruled by harsh names. Seek true placement in the house of Kudalasangama’s Sharanas.

For Sharana Sthala, this is belonging without self-claim.

Supporting Vachana

Pranalingi Sthala Vachana 715 — The Master of the House

Pranalingi Vachana 715 supports this teaching through the house-image. There, a house without the Master becomes disordered, while one in whom Kudalasangama Deva dwells is truly noble despite outer naming. Vachana 336 gives the Sharana form of that truth: though Basavanna calls himself no Bhakta and accepts harsh labels, his real identity is belonging as a son in the house of Kudalasangama’s Sharanas.

Advancing Vachana

Aikya Sthala Vachana 345 — The Cosmic Joke

Aikya Vachana 345 advances this teaching by dissolving the authority of social and occupational labels before realized Sharana-life. Vachana 336 moves from reproach-names to belonging in the house of the Sharanas; Aikya Vachana 345 shows the completed insight, where even revered Sharanas cannot be reduced to worldly labels, and any self-claim of superiority becomes laughable before Kudalasangama Deva.
