Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna says that the Lord comes near the true Bhaktas.
He asks whether it is fitting to remain on the bed when that presence arrives.
Before Kudalasangama Deva, he gives his vow: since Sangayya has come in Jangama form, he will never climb onto the bed.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The Lord coming near the true Bhaktas is the first movement. Divine presence is not kept abstract or distant; it comes through living relation.
The Jangama form of Sangayya is the central image. Basavanna identifies the arrival of Jangama with the arrival of Kudalasangama Deva’s own living presence.
The bed is the image of remaining above. It suggests comfort, elevation, and failure to respond when reverence is required.
The question “Is this virtue?” tests conduct. If one remains on the bed while Jangama arrives, inward recognition has not become outward humility.
The vow never to climb the bed completes the vachana. Basavanna fixes his conduct before Kudalasangama Deva: he will not remain elevated before the Jangama-form of Sangayya.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches that recognition of Linga must become conduct before Jangama.
The practice-point is direct: when Jangama comes, do not remain in comfort or elevation. Receive the living presence of Sangayya with humility, because Jangama is the field through which Kudalasangama Deva is served.
For Sharana Sthala, this is embodied reverence.
Editorial Commentary
The bed-image should remain central. Basavanna’s concern is not furniture, but the posture of elevation before Jangama. The line “Sangayya has come in Jangama form” gives the key: reverence to Jangama is reverence to the living arrival of Kudalasangama Deva.

Pranalingi Sthala Vachana 372 — The Trembling Hand Before the Ancients
Pranalingi Vachana 372 supports this teaching by showing Basavanna’s body responding when the Ancients and Sharanas come to his house. If the Jangama comes and the vision becomes true, he will perform Linga-archana before them. Vachana 396 carries that embodied reverence into Sharana Sthala: when Sangayya comes in Jangama form, Basavanna will not remain above on the bed.
Advancing Vachana
Aikya Sthala Vachana 1192 — Jangama Seva Is the Eternal Path
Aikya Vachana 1192 advances this teaching by declaring Jangama Seva to be Guru-puja, Linga-puja, sustenance, true nature, the Self, and the Eternal State. Vachana 396 begins with the immediate conduct of humility before Jangama; Aikya Vachana 1192 carries that conduct into the fulfilled state where service to Jangama becomes the very path and state of union before Kudalasangama Deva.
