Summary
Basavanna defines the mark of the Guru–disciple relationship. What is behind must be left behind, and what lies ahead must be firmly grasped. The relation is therefore not static attachment, but movement through transformation.
The disciple cannot remain holding the old while claiming to receive the new. The bond with the Guru is proved by the disciple’s readiness to release what has already served its purpose and enter what the Guru reveals.
The final image is a staff placed into fire. Once placed in fire, it cannot remain unchanged. The Sharana-stage teaching is clear: true discipleship requires total exposure to the transforming fire of transmission before Kudalasangama Deva.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The Guru–disciple relationship is the central field of the vachana. Basavanna does not describe it as social nearness, emotional loyalty, or inherited status. He gives its sign: movement from what is behind into what must be grasped ahead.
Leaving behind is the first action. The disciple must not keep clinging to former identity, former habit, former understanding, or former safety. What is behind must be released because it cannot carry the disciple into the next movement.
Grasping what lies ahead is the second action. The path requires firmness, not hesitation. The disciple must hold the forward movement given through the Guru.
The staff placed in fire is the decisive image. It is not placed near the fire for warmth or decoration. It is placed into the fire, where transformation is unavoidable.
The fire therefore becomes the image of transmission. The Guru-disciple bond burns away what cannot remain. The disciple’s readiness is measured by willingness to undergo that burning.
The address to Kudalasangama Deva gives the teaching its devotional ground. Basavanna does not speak of discipleship as independent discipline alone. The true relation of Guru and disciple belongs to the transforming field of Kudalasangama Deva.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches that the Guru–disciple bond must become transformative. The disciple must not preserve the old self while receiving the Guru’s direction.
For Sharana Sthala, the practice-point is decisive surrender to transmission. The Sharana leaves what is behind, grasps what is ahead, and allows the fire of the Guru’s guidance to work upon him.
This also protects the path from nominal discipleship. One may remain near a Guru outwardly and still avoid the fire. Basavanna’s mark is stricter: the true disciple is one who can be placed into the fire of transformation before Kudalasangama Deva.
Editorial Commentary
The image of the staff in fire should remain central. Basavanna’s point is not punishment, but irreversible transformation. The Guru–disciple relationship is genuine only when the disciple is willing to leave the old condition and enter the fire through which the new condition becomes possible.

Pranalingi Sthala Vachana 1004 — Chennabasavanna Revealed the Hidden Fire
Pranalingi Vachana 1004 supports this teaching by showing fire hidden within wood and brought forth through Chennabasavanna’s revelation. It says that Chennabasavanna revealed Sujñāna-Linga, established it throughout Basavanna’s whole being, showed the path of continuous true Linga-union, and awakened Shiva-bhakti in the mortal world. This prepares Vachana 929 directly. In Vachana 1004, the hidden fire of realization is revealed through living transmission; in Vachana 929, the Guru–disciple bond is marked by leaving the past, grasping the forward path, and being placed into the fire before Kudalasangama Deva.

Aikya Sthala Vachana 1011 — Beyond Knowing, Beyond Thought
Aikya Vachana 1011 advances this teaching by carrying Guru-disciple transmission into the arising of the Self-radiant Linga. It says that the Linga lies beyond knowing, remembrance, and contemplation, and asks how it can be known without the Guru’s showing. It then declares that within the churning of Guru and disciple, the Self-radiant Linga arises of itself. This is the natural Aikya fulfillment of Vachana 929. In Sharana Vachana 929, the disciple enters the fire of transmission; in Aikya Vachana 1011, that transmission becomes the churning through which the Self-radiant Linga is established as the true abode before Kudalasangama Deva.
