Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna confesses that he did not understand how a small greed destroyed a vast gain.
The loss is not only worldly. Not knowing the kula, the true source and lineage of bhakti, his mind became ruined by lesser pursuits.
He then turns to the remedy. If he comes to know through the company of Kudalasangama Deva’s Sharanas, he will live. The vachana teaches that Sharana-sanga restores the sense of true value.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
Small greed is the first image. It represents the mind’s attraction toward limited gain.
The loss of great profit gives the image its force. What appears small may cost what is immeasurably greater.
Basavanna applies this to spiritual life. The mind, not knowing the kula of bhakti, becomes damaged.
Kula here points to the true source, belonging, and current of devotion. Bhakti is not an isolated feeling; it belongs to a living lineage and field of realization.
Without that recognition, the mind chases minor gain and loses the greater wealth.
The company of the Sharanas becomes the corrective field. In their presence, the seeker learns what is precious and what is waste.
To “live” here means more than bodily survival. It means to regain orientation through the Sharanas of Kudalasangama Deva.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, the seeker must learn right valuation.
The Anga may spend its force on small gains, impressions, and worldly advantage. Such greed weakens its capacity for bhakti.
Sharana-sanga restores direction. The Sharanas reveal the living source of devotion and protect the seeker from false profit.
Practice matures when the mind stops trading the wealth of bhakti for passing gain.
