Vachana 1134 — The Great Gift of Serving the True Sharanas

Summary

Placed by the Lord in the mortal world, Basavanna built the Mahamane and spent his life as an attendant and servant of the true Sharanas. He does not claim the work or the service as his own achievement; both belong to the purpose entrusted to him.

When the Lord’s summons comes directing him to return, Basavanna receives Kudalasangama Deva’s directive as Mahaprasada. His coming, service, and return remain under the Lord’s command.

Imagery & Symbolic Relevance

The opening movement places Basavanna’s life under Divine direction. He comes into the mortal world because the Lord places him there. His work begins not from personal ambition but from an entrusted purpose.

The building of the Mahamane is the outward form of that purpose. Its significance lies in providing the field in which the true Sharanas are received and served.

Although Basavanna builds the Mahamane, he does not stand within it as its owner or master. The paired words tottu and bhritya express complete servanthood. His place is among those who attend upon the true Sharanas.

The phrase “spent my life” shows the extent of this service. It is not occasional assistance or ceremonial honour. Basavanna’s life is worn and expended in serving them.

The Lord’s summons to return corresponds to the opening Divine placement. The Lord determines both the beginning and the completion of the entrusted work.

The final declaration gathers the whole vachana. Kudalasangama Deva’s nirūpa—His authoritative message or directive—is received as Mahaprasada. Basavanna does not seek another reward for the life he has spent in service. The Lord’s direction itself is the supreme Prasada.

Lingayoga

In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches service without ownership. Work performed before the Linga must remain entrusted work and must not become personal status, possession, or accomplishment.

The seeker must be available both when called to serve and when called to relinquish the service. Receiving the Lord’s directive as Prasada removes self-claim from the entire course of action.

Editorial Commentary

The Kannada moves through two corresponding acts of the Lord: Basavanna is first placed in the mortal world and is later summoned to return. Between these two acts lies his life of service in the Mahamane.

Mahamane remains inseparable from the true Sharanas served within it. Its greatness lies not merely in being built, but in becoming the field of sustained Sharana-service.

Nirūpa indicates Kudalasangama Deva’s directive, message, or summons. Basavanna receives that directive as Mahaprasada.
