Vachana 1174- Calling Without Trust

Summary

In this vachana, Basavanna distinguishes true invocation from empty calling. When one calls upon Guru, Linga, and Jangama with trust, Shiva answers, “O.”

But if one calls without trust, will Shiva answer? Basavanna says that such devotees do not know trust and do not know love. Their calling is outward, not living.

The vachana ends with Shambhu remaining silent when one calls without trust and love. The teaching is direct: words alone do not reach Kudalasangama Deva. Invocation must arise from trust, love, and inward participation.

Imagery & Symbolic Relevance

The act of calling is the central image. It represents prayer, invocation, remembrance, and approach to the Divine.

Guru, Linga, and Jangama form the sacred field of the call. To call them with trust is to enter relation, not merely to pronounce names.

The answering “O” is the image of response. It shows recognition, acknowledgment, and living contact. The call has reached because it has arisen from the heart.

Basavanna then asks whether Shiva answers a call made without trust. The implied answer is no. The sound may be made, but the relation is absent.

Trust and love are named as the necessary conditions. Without them, the devotee becomes dambhi — one whose devotion is outward, hollow, or deceptive.

Shambhu’s silence is the final image. This silence does not show weakness in Shiva. It exposes the emptiness of the call. Where the heart does not trust or love, the words return unanswered.

The imagery therefore teaches that sacred names must not be reduced to sound alone. Calling becomes real only when the caller stands inwardly joined to what is called.

Lingayoga

In Lingayoga, invocation must arise from the whole being. The seeker cannot merely repeat Guru, Linga, and Jangama while the heart remains elsewhere.

Trust steadies the Anga before the Linga. Love softens the relation and makes the call living. Without these, practice becomes sound without contact.

This vachana therefore warns against mechanical repetition. The issue is not the number of calls, but the truth from which the call arises.

Lingayoga matures when remembrance becomes relational. The name is called with trust, the heart participates, and awareness becomes able to receive response.

Editorial Commentary

This vachana should be read as a teaching on sincere invocation. Basavanna does not reject calling the Divine Name; he rejects calling without trust and love.

The teaching is direct: where trust and love are absent, Shambhu remains silent.
