Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna prays for protection of inner steadiness. Let firmness not be lost so that he does not beg from others. Let discernment not be lost so that he does not praise others falsely.
He then prays that the mind should not run toward another’s wife. He also asks not to move with those who do not follow the Shiva-path, and not to enter misaligned association.
The final prayer is direct: protect me, Kudalasangama Deva. The teaching is not about outward safety alone, but about guarding the mind, speech, desire, discernment, and association.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The first image is lost steadiness. When firmness is lost, dependence upon others begins.
The second image is lost discernment. When discernment is lost, speech becomes misplaced praise.
The third image is the mind running toward another’s wife. This shows desire moving beyond rightful boundary.
The fourth image is company with those outside the Shiva-path. Basavanna warns against association that pulls the seeker away from sacred direction.
The fifth image is misaligned association. This is not merely outer contact, but a bond that can disturb inner orientation.
The final image is protection by Kudalasangama Deva. Basavanna does not trust his own strength alone. He asks to be guarded from the movements that weaken the path.
Together, these images show the vulnerabilities of the seeker: loss of steadiness, loss of discernment, misplaced praise, wandering desire, and harmful association. The prayer is for protection from all these.

Editorial Commentary
This vachana should be read as a prayer for guarded conduct. Basavanna does not ask to withdraw from life. He asks to be protected from inner collapse: loss of firmness, loss of discernment, wrongful desire, and association that turns the mind away from the Shiva-path.
