Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna confesses that his conduct changes according to company. When he sees worldly people, he speaks and acts like them. When he sees arguers, he speaks and acts like them.
He then names what is lacking within him. Sahaja-guṇa is not present. True bhakti is not present.
Basavanna finally asks: if ekobhava, the one-feeling, is not in him, why should Kudalasangama Deva show grace? The teaching is clear: without inner steadiness, true bhakti and one-pointedness have not yet become established.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The first image is the company of worldly people. Basavanna sees himself becoming like those he is with. His inner state is shaped by the outer company before him.
The second image is the company of arguers. Among those who argue, he also argues, speaks, and acts according to that atmosphere.
The third image is the absence of sahaja-guṇa. Natural steadiness has not become his own condition. His nature is still changeable.
The fourth image is the absence of true bhakti. Devotion is not yet established as an inward truth that remains the same in different conditions.
The final image is the absence of ekobhava. The mind has not become one. Because the inward state is still divided and reactive, Basavanna asks how grace can descend.
Together, these images show instability. The seeker changes with the worldly, changes with the argumentative, lacks natural steadiness, lacks true bhakti, and has not yet entered one-feeling before Kudalasangama Deva.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana tests whether practice has become steady within the seeker. If the mind changes with every company, practice has not yet become rooted.
The seeker must not become worldly among the worldly and argumentative among arguers. Inner steadiness must remain before different influences.
The practical movement here is toward sahaja-guṇa and ekobhava. Basavanna recognizes that true bhakti requires a steadiness that does not depend on outer company.
Editorial Commentary
This vachana should be read as a confession of reactive identity. Basavanna does not blame the worldly or the arguers. He sees that his own mind is not yet steady enough to remain unchanged before them.
