Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna gives the image of a sheep entering a sugarcane field. Though surrounded by sweetness, it does not know the cane’s essence.
It eats only the outer leaves and remains at the surface. Nearness has not become taste.
Basavanna then asks whether anyone other than the elephant that knows You can truly know Kudalasangama Deva. The teaching is clear: the sacred must be entered deeply, not merely approached outwardly.

The seeker must move beyond outer contact into living taste. Practice must reach the essence, not stop at the leaf.
The practical movement here is inward capacity. Basavanna asks the seeker to become like the elephant that knows the sweetness, not the sheep that remains at the surface.
Editorial Commentary
This vachana should be read as a warning against superficial nearness. The sheep is not outside the sugarcane field; it is inside, yet it misses the sweetness.
The contrast with the elephant gives the teaching its force. Access alone is not enough. One must have the capacity to reach the inner juice.
