Vachana Distribution at a Glance
Six Sthalas — One Continuing Movement of Transformation
The 1,417 Vachanas in this study are not simply placed under six headings. They have been studied and arranged according to the dominant transformative movement that each Vachana appears to illuminate within the Sixfold Path:
Bhakta — 180
Maheshwara — 152
Prasadi — 127
Pranalingi — 127
Sharana — 395
Aikya — 436
Total — 1,417 Vachanas
The detailed distribution in the study records these Vachanas separately under each of the six Sthalas.
But the Vachanas do not stand in isolation.
A single Vachana may illuminate more than one Sthala. Its principal placement identifies what this study understands as its dominant transformative movement, while its wider relationships help us recognise the continuity running through Basavanna’s teachings.
For this reason, the study also brings the Vachanas together through two forms of cross-reference:
Supporting Vachanas
A Supporting Vachana may help reveal an underlying cause, related condition, earlier movement, or complementary understanding that helps us see the principal Vachana more deeply.
Advancing Vachanas
An Advancing Vachana may show how that condition is corrected, deepened, transformed, or carried further towards surrender and fulfilment.
The detailed charts in the study trace such Supporting and Advancing lineages through the Sthalas.
In the present cross-referencing structure, there are:
5,801 Supporting relationships
3,952 Advancing relationships
Total — 9,753 relationships
These relationships do not create new teachings, establish a hierarchy, or place one Vachana above another. They are an interpretive study framework developed to help the seeker recognise how one Vachana may illuminate, support or carry forward the understanding of another.
Across the six Sthalas, a broad inner movement can often be recognised:
Hidden condition → Recognition → Correction → Transformed living → Anubhava → Surrender → Fulfilment
This is important because Basavanna repeatedly takes us beyond the outward act to what sustains it within — the fear, desire, attachment, pride, identity, expectation, contradiction or inner value beneath what we do.
A person may perform an outwardly good act, but the Vachana asks us to look deeper:
What is moving me?What am I attached to?What am I afraid of losing? Is there pride behind service?Possession behind love?Expectation behind giving?Identity behind devotion?Has understanding actually changed my conduct?
Here lies the deeper purpose of the study.
Basavanna does not merely ask us to acquire information.
He asks us to transform what we know into the way we live.
Has what we know entered the way we live?
That question brings the entire Sixfold Path back to the individual.
Bhakti must enter conduct.Awareness must enter action.Work must carry dignity and responsibility.Receiving must lose possessiveness.Sharing must lose pride.Knowledge must mature into Anubhava. And surrender must gradually loosen the separation between the seeker and the Divine.
The purpose of studying these interconnections is therefore not to classify Basavanna more rigidly, but to help us see more clearly the living movement within the Vachanas.
Relevance for Today and Tomorrow
Humanity has advanced greatly in knowledge, science, technology, communication, wealth and power. Artificial Intelligence can process information, translate languages and connect people across the world within moments.
Yet the fundamental human questions remain:
How should I live? How should I work and earn? How should I treat another human being? How should wealth and power be used? How do I recognise pride, greed, fear and discrimination within myself? How can progress remain connected with conscience?
These are not only questions of the twelfth century.
They are questions for today — and they will remain questions for tomorrow.
Basavanna’s teachings remind us that:
Knowledge needs humility.Work needs dignity.Wealth needs responsibility.Prosperity needs sharing.Power needs justice.Religion needs compassion.Technology needs humanity. And progress needs conscience.
The medium may change — from Anubhava and oral tradition to manuscripts, books, translations, music, websites and emerging technologies — but the essential invitation of the Vachana remains the same:
Read. Understand. Look within. Recognise. Correct. Live.
Basavanna’s Vachanas belong to history, but their living relevance lies in the life we are living today and in the society we are building for tomorrow.
Note on the Detailed Distribution and Cross-References
The complete Vachana distribution and the Supporting and Advancing relationships represent an interpretive study framework developed for deeper study and understanding. They are not presented as a canonical arrangement made by Basavanna.
To preserve their context and responsible use, the complete detailed cross-reference material will be made available on request to sincere seekers, students, researchers and institutions. Those interested may contact us by email, briefly mentioning the purpose of their study.
The intention is not to restrict sincere inquiry, but to ensure that these interpretive relationships are understood and used in the spirit in which they were developed — for study, self-reflection and deeper engagement with the Vachanas.
The original Vachana remains primary.
