Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna compares his bhakti to one who worships a threshold and then stamps over it.
The act begins with reverence but ends in contradiction. What was honored in one moment is dishonored in the next.
He then applies the same fault to Jangama-bhakti. If one calls the Jangama “my lord,” receives from him, and then treats him with indifference, one becomes distant from both this world and the next. The vachana warns that devotion must remain faithful after reverence is spoken.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The threshold is the first image. It marks entry, approach, and relation. To worship it is to acknowledge its sacred significance.
To stamp over the same threshold exposes inconsistency. The body performs reverence, but conduct immediately betrays it.
Basavanna uses this image to describe bhakti that does not continue beyond the moment of worship.
The Jangama becomes the living test of the same truth. To call the Jangama “my lord” is to recognize sacred presence.
Receiving from the Jangama deepens the obligation. The seeker has not only spoken reverence; he has accepted grace, instruction, or support.
Indifference after receiving is therefore a serious fall. It reveals that reverence was not held in the heart.
The warning of distance from this world and the next shows the completeness of the loss. Such conduct fails both ordinary integrity and spiritual truth.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, reverence must become continuity.
The Anga may bow, speak sacred words, or receive from Jangama, but practice is tested in what follows.
To worship and then trample is to divide act from awareness. To receive and then become indifferent is to break the movement of grace.
Practice matures when the seeker preserves reverence after the moment of contact and allows Jangama-bhakti to shape conduct.
