Vachana 601 — The Already-Present Divine

Summary

Imagery & Symbolic Relevance

True Bhava gives the opening measure. Basavanna begins with inward sincerity rather than birth, study, or ritual qualification.

Lakshmi and Saraswati are named together. Their favour brings abundance and sacred learning into relation with true Bhava.

The question “Why seek lineage?” removes ancestry as the decisive measure once such favour is present. Divine acceptance outweighs inherited classification.

The next question concerns the Bhakta favoured by Deva. When that relation has been established, another mantra cannot add a greater authority to it.

The mantra represents a sacred means of approach. Basavanna places the Lord’s favour beyond the multiplication of such means.

The Kamadhenu within the house gives the clearest comparison. When the source of provision is already present, searching elsewhere for another cow becomes unnecessary.

The question concerning delusion and modesty introduces a contrasting condition. Where Moha governs, Lajjā cannot be secured merely by searching for its appearance. Inner condition determines the truth of outward quality.

The vachana then turns from comparison to event: Mahādāni Kudalasangayya favoured Madara Chennayya and ate in his house.

The act of eating gives Divine acceptance a visible form. Kudalasangayya’s favour is revealed through fellowship in Chennayya’s home.

Madara Chennayya therefore stands as evidence that lineage and scriptural privilege do not control the Lord’s response.

The final challenge is directed to those who have read the Veda: let them win the favour of the Linga and show it.

Basavanna measures learning by living relation. Recitation receives its fulfilment when the Linga responds.

Lingayoga

In Lingayoga, inherited identity, accumulated learning, and multiplied mantra cannot replace the living relation between Bhakta and Linga.

Mantra serves approach, yet the seeker’s attention remains directed toward the Lord being invoked. The aim is not possession of more sacred formulas, but truthful Bhava through which Kudalasangama Deva receives the devotee.

Madara Chennayya’s house becomes the field of verification. Divine favour appears in lived fellowship rather than social approval.

The seeker therefore cultivates true Bhava, remains receptive to the Linga, and measures spiritual life by the relation that becomes visible in conduct.

Editorial Commentary

The opening question joins Lakshmi and Saraswati with true Bhava and asks why lineage must then be sought. Its concern is sacred acceptance beyond ancestry.

The Kamadhenu-image presents sufficiency through presence: the source already stands within the house.

The Moha–Lajjā contrast concerns correspondence between inward condition and outward quality. Modesty has no firm ground where delusion governs.

The final line is a challenge to Vedic learning. Basavanna asks its possessors to gain the Linga’s favour and demonstrate it, placing Madara Chennayya’s lived acceptance before them as the measure.
