Vachana 645- The Straw Bull and the False Worshipper

Summary

In this vachana, Basavanna exposes the split between worship and conduct.

A person may sit before the Linga and perform puja, yet live through hidden falsehood. The outer act appears sacred, but the intention behind it is crooked.

He gives the image of a hunter hiding behind a straw bull to strike a deer. In the same way, religious appearance may become a cover for harmful intent. Kudalasangama Deva does not receive worship from the hands of thieves and deceivers.

Imagery & Symbolic Relevance

The seated worshipper before the Linga gives the opening scene. The body is in the place of devotion, and the act of worship appears proper.

Basavanna then uncovers the inner contradiction. Sacred posture loses its worth when the life behind it moves in falsehood.

The straw bull is the central image. It looks harmless, but it is used as a screen.

Behind it, the hunter aims at the deer. The act is not open; it depends on concealment.

The deer represents the vulnerable target. It is approached through disguise, not through direct confrontation.

This image makes the teaching precise. Ritual form can become like the straw bull when it hides greed, theft, cruelty, or manipulation.

The final reference to thieves and deceivers brings the matter to conduct. The hand that offers worship must not be the same hand that steals or harms.

Lingayoga

In Lingayoga, the body cannot be offered while the mind remains hidden.

The Anga must stand whole before Linga. Posture, intention, speech, and action must not pull in different directions.

This vachana warns against using sacred practice as cover. The Linga is not approached through concealment, but through inward exposure.

Practice matures when worship becomes transparent living before Kudalasangama Deva.

Editorial Commentary

This vachana corrects worship that is sacred in form but corrupt in intention.

Basavanna does not reject Linga-puja. He rejects the use of Linga-puja as a screen for a life that has not become truthful.
