Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna shows that even powerful things have something before which they yield. The elephant yields to the goad, the mountain to the thunderbolt, darkness to light, and the forest to fire.
He then turns to the five great sins. Their conqueror is the Name of Kudalasangama Deva.
The teaching is direct: the Divine Name is not empty sound. It is the force before which deep impurity loses its hold.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The elephant is controlled by the goad. Great physical strength is turned by a small but directed instrument.
The mountain is split by the thunderbolt. What appears solid and immovable can be broken by a greater power.
Darkness vanishes before light. It does not need to be pushed away; illumination itself ends it.
The forest is consumed by fire. Its vastness cannot withstand the force that burns through it.
These four images prepare the final claim. The five great sins, however grave, have their own conqueror: the Name of Kudalasangama Deva.
Basavanna therefore places the Name among decisive powers. It directs, breaks, illumines, and consumes what binds the seeker inwardly.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, remembrance of the Name must become an active force in the Anga. It is not merely recited; it must work upon the inner field.
The five great sins represent deep impurity and binding tendencies. Ordinary effort may be insufficient before them.
This vachana teaches reliance on the Name as purifying power. When the seeker holds the Name with devotion, it acts where personal strength cannot.
Practice matures when the Name of Kudalasangama Deva becomes the force that turns, cuts, illumines, and burns away obstruction.
