Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna overturns ordinary measures of caste and worth. Whatever one may be by social description, if one has not been touched by the Linga, that condition remains low. Birth, status, or inherited standing cannot give true spiritual nobility.
The moment the Linga touches, the measure changes. Basavanna compares this to iron touched by parasu: once touched, it becomes gold and does not remain as before. In the same way, the one touched by Linga is no longer to be measured by former identity.
The final warning concerns doubt. Kudalasangama Deva does not accept those who remain divided by doubt. The teaching is direct: Linga-touch, not caste-status, is the decisive mark; transformation, not inherited identity, is the true measure.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The first image is the person without Linga-touch. Basavanna says that whatever such a person may be outwardly, without the touch of Linga the condition remains spiritually low. This is not a defense of social hierarchy; it is a reversal of it. The absence of Linga-touch, not birth, becomes the issue.
The second image is caste or lineage becoming true through Linga-touch. Basavanna shifts the basis of worth away from inherited identity and toward sacred contact. What matters is not what one is called by the world, but whether one has been touched by Linga.
The third image is iron touched by parasu. Iron by itself remains iron. When touched by the transforming principle, it becomes gold. This image shows a change of condition, not a mere change of name.
The final image is doubt. Doubt here is not sincere inquiry, but dividedness that prevents settled trust. One who remains divided cannot stand firmly in the transformation brought by Linga-touch.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana shows that Linga must become the true measure of life. The seeker is not defined by birth, caste, public name, or inherited identity. The question is whether the Linga has truly touched and transformed the person.
For Prasadi Sthala, the relevance lies in receiving Linga-touch without self-claim or doubt. The seeker receives a new measure from Kudalasangama Deva. Former identity is not the final authority; sacred contact is.
Editorial Commentary
This vachana should be read as a radical correction of caste-based valuation. Basavanna is not saying that one social caste is inherently higher than another. He is saying that without Linga-touch, no inherited identity has spiritual worth; with Linga-touch, the old measure no longer holds.
The parasu image strengthens the teaching. Iron does not become gold by social declaration. It changes through transforming contact. Likewise, the Linga-bearer is noble only where Linga-touch has become real and doubt has been overcome before Kudalasangama Deva.

Supporting Vachana
Maheshwara Sthala Vachana 285 — The Pride of Caste and the Wandering Mind
Maheshwara Vachana 285 supports this vachana by exposing caste-pride as a violation of Linga-truth. In Vachana 142, Basavanna teaches that worth is not fixed by birth, but by Linga-touch. In Maheshwara Vachana 285, he shows that if caste-pride divides the Jangama or creates distinction within the Linga, even daily Linga worship becomes contradiction. The support is direct: caste-measure and Linga-truth cannot stand together.
Advancing Vachana
Pranalingi Sthala Vachana 568 — The Alchemy of Inner Transformation
Pranalingi Vachana 568 advances this movement by carrying the teaching from Linga-touch into inward transformation. In Vachana 142, the one touched by Linga is no longer measured by former caste or status, just as iron touched by parasu becomes gold. In Vachana 568, Basavanna declares that devotion and knowledge have no caste boundary, and that only the inner fire of transformation makes iron gold. Thus the Prasadi teaching of sacred contact advances into Pranalingi as inner alchemy, where caste, display, and inherited identity fall away before Kudalasangama Deva.
