Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna questions any deity that can be consumed, burned, sold, buried, or protected through fear. Such a thing cannot be called the true God.
He tests external forms by impermanence. If termites can eat it, fire can burn it, the market can sell it, or fear can bury it, it cannot be the final refuge.
Basavanna then declares that Kudalasangama Deva alone is God: the one of natural being, true unity, and self-existent presence.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The deity eaten by termites shows a form subject to decay.
The deity burned by fire shows a form subject to destruction.
The deity sold in the marketplace shows sacredness reduced to exchange.
The deity buried through fear shows a form dependent on protection and concealment.
Against all these, Basavanna places Kudalasangama Deva as sahaja-bhava and nija-aikya: natural being and true union.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana turns the seeker from perishable outer dependence toward the living presence of Kudalasangama Deva.
For Prasadi Sthala, the teaching is that grace cannot rest finally in what decays, burns, sells, or hides. The seeker must recognize the Lord who is not subject to such conditions.
Editorial Commentary
This vachana should be read as a test of spiritual dependence. Basavanna does not measure God by outer form, but by what remains beyond decay, fire, commerce, and fear.
The final declaration is decisive: Kudalasangama Deva alone is God because He is not a made, perishable, or fear-bound object.

Maheshwara Sthala Vachana 978 — Beyond Mechanical Worship
Maheshwara Vachana 978 supports this vachana by warning that worship of the fixed form, while neglecting the living Jangama, does not reach Kudalasangama Deva. In Vachana 557, Basavanna rejects the deity that is perishable, burnable, saleable, or fearfully hidden. Both vachanas turn the seeker away from dependence on fixed external form alone.

Pranalingi Sthala Vachana 962 — One Cannot Bow to the Fixed Idol Once the Living Linga Is Realized
Pranalingi Vachana 962 advances this teaching by saying that once Linga has descended into prana and the deity rests in breath, palm, and consciousness, one cannot return to fixed external dependence. In Vachana 557, Basavanna declares that Kudalasangama Deva alone is the true God beyond perishable forms. In Vachana 962, this becomes the Pranalingi state where Linga is realized as living presence.
