Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna uses the image of outer covering and fruit.
When the outer fibre is removed, the fruit within is revealed. Once the covering is removed, the sprouted fruit cannot fail to appear.
Basavanna then turns the image toward action. O giver of fruit to the one who acts, when word, conduct, and inner truth become steady in You, that person is the pure Sharana, O Kudalasangama Deva.
The teaching is that the fruit of the path appears when covering falls away and conduct becomes true. Sharanahood is not a name. It is revealed when one’s life becomes inwardly aligned with Kudalasangama Deva.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The first image is the outer fibre or covering. It conceals what lies within.
The second image is the fruit. The fruit is already within, but it is not seen while the covering remains.
The third image is the sprouted fruit. Once the covering is removed and the condition is right, the fruit does not fail.
Basavanna then moves from image to conduct. Action must bear fruit, but not every action becomes spiritual fruit. The act must become truthful in Kudalasangama Deva.
The pure Sharana is therefore not one who merely claims the path. The true Sharana is the one in whom word, conduct, and inward steadiness are made true before Kudalasangama Deva.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches that realization is revealed through removal of covering and alignment of life.
The seeker should not be satisfied with outer appearance or verbal claim. The covering must fall, and the action must become true.
For Prasadi Sthala, the teaching is that grace becomes fruitful when the seeker receives, acts, and lives in alignment with Kudalasangama Deva. The fruit is not forced; it appears when the covering no longer obstructs.
Editorial Commentary
The Kannada vachana rests on two movements: the removal of covering and the certainty of fruit.
“Fruit-giver” points to Kudalasangama Deva as the one before whom action receives its true result.
The phrase “pure Sharana” should be understood through alignment. The one whose word, conduct, and inner state become true in Kudalasangama Deva is the true Sharana.

Pranalingi Vachana 928 advances this teaching by showing that direct experience must be tested and clarified through the living discernment of the Guru-Jangama.
In Vachana 864, the fruit is revealed when the covering is removed and the seeker becomes true in Kudalasangama Deva. In Vachana 928, this matures into Pranalingi discernment, where what has appeared within must be known rightly through the touchstone of living realization.
