Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna begins with the condition of embodied birth. The body arises from śukla and śoṇita, seed and blood; this alone should awaken humility.
Yet the human being adds further burden through wrong action. Instead of using birth as an opportunity for turning, one moves again toward the mouth of death.
Basavanna therefore calls the seeker to worship Kudalasangama Deva, the Lord who enables victory over repeated birth.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
Śukla and śoṇita form the first image. Basavanna points to the bodily origin of human birth in order to remove pride.
The shame here is not rejection of the body. It is the shame of taking birth and then wasting it in further bondage.
The burden of wrong action is the next movement. Birth itself is already a condition requiring discrimination; to add more impurity is to deepen the weight.
The mouth of death is the central image of danger. Life that does not turn toward the Divine moves directly into death’s grasp.
Repeated birth is therefore not presented as mere continuity. It is a cycle to be overcome through worship of Kudalasangama Deva.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, human birth is a serious opportunity. The Anga has received a body through which awareness, worship, and surrender can become possible.
This vachana asks the practitioner to examine whether the body is being used for awakening or for further burden.
The mouth of death warns against delay. The body does not remain available forever.
Practice matures when the seeker uses embodied life to worship Kudalasangama Deva and move beyond repeated return.
Editorial Commentary
This vachana turns reflection on birth into urgency.
Basavanna’s concern is that the rare human opportunity should not be spent in actions that carry the seeker back into death.
