Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna gives a direct instruction: do not ask from those who are not Shiva-bhaktas.
If one asks there, the asking becomes empty. What is sought from such a place has no true fruit.
Basavanna then turns to the Sharanas of Kudalasanga. To the hand that asks, they are able to give without limit.
The teaching is simple and firm: the seeker must know where to ask. Asking from those not joined to Shiva-bhakti leads to emptiness, but the Sharanas of Kudalasanga give without measure.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The first image is asking from those who are not Shiva-bhaktas. Basavanna is not speaking of asking in every ordinary matter. He is warning against seeking spiritual support from a source that is not rooted in Shiva-bhakti.
The second image is becoming empty. The one who asks from the wrong source does not receive what truly sustains the path. The asking itself becomes fruitless.
The third image is the asking hand. The hand represents need, dependence, and readiness to receive.
The final image is the boundless giving of Kudalasanga’s Sharanas. Their giving is not described as small, measured, or reluctant. Basavanna says they can give without end to the hand that asks.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches discernment in receiving.
The seeker must not stretch the hand toward every source. The hand that asks should turn toward Kudalasanga’s Sharanas, where giving remains joined to Shiva-bhakti.
For Prasadi Sthala, the point is exact: Prasada is received rightly when the source is right. The Prasadi must know the difference between empty asking and asking before the Sharanas of Kudalasanga.
Editorial Commentary
“Do not ask from those who are not Shiva-bhaktas” should be kept as the governing instruction.
The phrase about becoming empty, shows the consequence of asking from the wrong source.
The “asking hand” should remain central. Basavanna does not condemn the hand that asks; he directs it toward the Sharanas of Kudalasanga, who give without limit.

Pranalingi Vachana 966 advances this teaching by showing firm Ekalinga-niṣṭhā after the Anga-Linga relation has been received. In Vachana 1286, the seeker is told not to ask from those outside Shiva-bhakti, but to receive from Kudalasanga’s Sharanas. In Vachana 966, this becomes Pranalingi steadiness: after the One Linga has been received, the seeker must not wander into scattered dependence, but remain within the disciplined fullness of Guru, Linga, Jangama, Padodaka, Prasada, and Sadbhakti.
