Vachana 734- The Unbroken Vessel

Summary

In this vachana, Basavanna asks what joy can be offered or received when Linga, the Divine Reality or sacred principle of Shiva, has not entered the Anga, the embodied self or individual being. Without that inward relation, the state is not fit for the path of Bhakti.

He then extends the same test to the Sharana path. Without Linga becoming livingly related to the seeker, one cannot claim the path of the Sharana either.

The final warning is severe. When Kudalasangama Deva is absent, even what is taken in becomes kilbiṣa, a stain or impurity. The teaching is that body, devotion, and Sharana identity become true only when Linga is inwardly present and assimilated into life.

Imagery & Symbolic Relevance

The first image is Anga without Linga. Anga here is the embodied seeker. Basavanna’s question shows that bodily existence alone is not the ground of spiritual joy.

The second image is joy. Joy is not treated as ordinary pleasure. It becomes meaningful only when Linga has entered the life of the seeker.

The Bhakti path is the next measure. Basavanna says that without this inward relation to Linga, one is not fit for the path of Bhakti. Devotion cannot rest on name or appearance alone.

The Sharana path is then brought under the same measure. To be a Sharana is not merely to claim a position or identity. The path requires living relation to Kudalasangama Deva.

The final image is what is swallowed becoming kilbiṣa. Food or intake usually sustains life, but Basavanna reverses the expectation. When Kudalasangama Deva is absent from the inner condition, even what is taken in becomes spiritually stained.

Lingayoga

In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches that Linga must not remain external to the seeker. The relation between Anga and Linga must become inwardly active.

For Pranalingi Sthala, the emphasis is clear: life, breath, body, devotion, and Sharana-identity must be joined to Linga. Without that joining, even religious language remains incomplete.

The practice-point is direct: do not claim Bhakti or Sharana path without inward Linga-relation. Let Kudalasangama Deva become the living center of body, intake, conduct, and devotion.

Editorial Commentary

“Kilbiṣa” should be kept as a strong term. It means stain, fault, or impurity, and in this vachana it marks the consequence of living without Kudalasangama Deva as inward presence.

The vachana should not be expanded into rejection of the body. Basavanna is testing the body’s spiritual condition: Anga becomes meaningful when joined to Linga.

Supporting Vachana

Prasadi Sthala Vachana 657 — True Nobility Is Linga-Bhakti

Prasadi Vachana 657 supports this vachana by teaching that Bhakti cannot become established where bhava is not pure. There, Basavanna says that outer acts such as building, touching, and offering do not suffice unless the mind itself is touched and purified.

Vachana 734 carries the same concern into Pranalingi Sthala. Without Linga entering Anga, one is not fit for the Bhakti path or the Sharana path, and what is taken in becomes kilbiṣa. Thus Prasadi Vachana 657 supports the Pranalingi teaching that devotion must become inwardly established, not merely outwardly claimed.

Advancing Vachana

Sharana Sthala Vachana 1089 — When Everything Is Yours

Sharana Vachana 1089 advances this teaching by carrying inward Linga-relation into total surrender. There, Basavanna offers body, mind, wealth, knowledge, and even ignorance to Kudalasangama Deva, leaving nothing outside the Lord’s ownership.

In Vachana 734, Anga without Linga is not fit for Bhakti or Sharana path. In Vachana 1089, this advances into Sharana Sthala as complete belonging: body, mind, possessions, knowledge, and ignorance are all given to Kudalasangama Deva. Thus the Pranalingi demand that Linga enter Anga matures into Sharana surrender, where nothing remains separate from the Lord.
