Vachana 1062- Beyond the Offering and the Meal

Summary

In this vachana, Basavanna warns those who claim attainment after offering to the Ishtalinga, eating the sacred meal, and saying that their desires have been fulfilled. He calls them deluded when they mistake the outer act for realization.

He asks directly: where is Pranalinga Sthala in you? Where is Prasada Sthala in you? The question is not whether food was offered or eaten, but whether the Linga has entered life and whether Prasada has become inwardly real.

Basavanna then gives the sharp comparison of a mute animal eating food. If eating alone were enough, mere consumption would become realization. Before Kudalasangama Deva, he rejects that error and insists on inward assimilation.

Imagery & Symbolic Relevance

The first image is offering to the Ishtalinga. Basavanna does not reject the offering; he rejects the assumption that the act is complete by outer performance alone.

The second image is eating the sacred meal. Food may be received after offering, but physical eating is not the same as Prasada Sthala.

The third image is the claim of fulfilled desire. This shows spiritual complacency: the seeker mistakes satisfaction for realization.

The fourth image is the question of Pranalinga Sthala. The Linga must become inwardly joined with life and awareness.

The fifth image is the question of Prasada Sthala. Prasada must be known as grace within, not merely taken as food.

The final image is the mute animal eating. This comparison marks the difference between consumption and realization.

Lingayoga

In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches that sacred action must become inwardly effective. Ishtalinga worship, offering, and sacred eating should not remain external events.

For Pranalingi Sthala, the point is precise. The Linga must be realized in relation to prana, and Prasada must be assimilated as grace. Without that inward ripening, the seeker has only performed and consumed.

The practice-point is direct: do not claim attainment because an offering was made or a meal was eaten. Ask whether Pranalinga Sthala and Prasada Sthala have become real within.

Supporting Vachana

Prasadi Sthala Vachana 1266 — The Sacredness Bestowed by the Linga

Prasadi Vachana 1266 supports this vachana by showing that sacredness arises through Linga and the living relation with Jangama. There, what comes through Jangama-mukha becomes Naivedya to Kudalasangama Deva and Prasada to the receiver. Vachana 1062 carries this further by asking whether offering and eating have actually become Pranalinga Sthala and Prasada Sthala within. Thus Prasadi 1266 prepares the Pranalingi correction: sacred food must become inward Prasada, not remain physical consumption.

Advancing Vachana

Sharana Sthala Vachana 808 — The Measure of True Dasoha

Sharana Vachana 808 advances this teaching by carrying inward assimilation into complete Dasoha. In Vachana 1062, Basavanna rejects the claim that offering and eating alone establish Pranalinga Sthala or Prasada Sthala. In Vachana 808, service of body, life, inner being, and speech becomes whole only through the way of Prana-Linga known among the Sharanas. Thus Pranalingi inward realization advances into Sharana Sthala as integrated living Dasoha before Kudalasangama Deva.
