Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna compares his own condition to a Mailara figure that appears striking from the outside but is filled with straw within.
The outer color may be pleasing, but the inside has no living strength.
He then compares his state to the sleep of a dog being mistaken for tapas. The body may appear still, but stillness without awareness is not spiritual discipline. Before Kudalasangama Deva, Basavanna confesses the danger of appearance without inner awakening.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The Mailara figure is the first image. It carries the appearance of force, color, and presence.
Yet its interior is only straw. The image exposes the difference between decorated form and living substance.
Basavanna turns this image toward himself. His concern is not merely outward criticism, but inward honesty before Kudalasangama Deva.
The second image is the sleeping dog. A dog may lie motionless, but its stillness is only sleep.
Tapas requires awareness, restraint, and inner fire. Sleep resembles stillness outwardly, but it has no discipline within it.
Together, the two images expose false resemblance. A straw-filled figure is not a warrior, and a sleeping dog is not a tapasvin.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, posture and stillness must be filled with awareness.
The Anga may sit, appear restrained, and bear the marks of practice, yet the inner field may remain dull.
The Mailara image warns against spiritual appearance without inner force. The sleeping dog warns against mistaking bodily quietness for tapas.
Practice matures when stillness becomes awake, and outer form is filled with living relation to Linga.
Editorial Commentary
This vachana is a confession of hollow appearance.
Basavanna asks that the seeker not mistake color, posture, or stillness for realized devotion.
