Vachana 780 — The Stillness of True Company

Summary

In this vachana, Basavanna speaks of the transforming effect of seeing the Sajjana Sharanas.

He says that on seeing the true and noble Sharanas, his mind swelled with joy. The first movement is not intellectual conclusion, but an inward expansion caused by Sharana-presence.

He then says that by holding the feet of the Śrī Guru, he became purified. The Guru’s feet are the place of refuge, grounding, and correction. Purity comes through holding that refuge, not through self-claim.

The final line gives the decisive fruit. Through Padodaka-Prasada, bhava was cut away. Becoming, bondage, and worldly entanglement lose their hold through the sacred receiving that comes through Guru and Sharana.

The teaching is direct: the sight of true Sharanas expands the mind in joy; holding the Guru’s feet purifies; and through Padodaka-Prasada the bondage of bhava is severed before Kudalasangama Deva.

Imagery & Symbolic Relevance

The Sajjana Sharanas are the first image. Basavanna does not speak of ordinary company. He speaks of noble, true Sharanas whose presence itself changes the mind.

The mind swelling with joy is important. This should not be reduced to ordinary emotion. The mind expands because it has encountered living Sharana-presence. The sight of the Sharanas becomes inward nourishment.

The word “see” gives the vachana its directness. Basavanna says, “Look.” He points to an experienced change. The effect of Sharana-darshana is not theoretical.

The feet of the Śrī Guru are the next central image. To hold the Guru’s feet is to take firm refuge in the source of guidance. It is not casual respect; it is surrendered dependence upon the Guru’s path.

Purification follows from this holding. Basavanna says he became pure by holding the Guru’s feet. The impurity is not removed by display, but by true contact with Guru-refuge.

Padodaka-Prasada is the final sacred image. Padodaka and Prasada are not treated as outer substances alone. They become the means through which bhava is cut away.

Bhava is the bondage of becoming. Basavanna says that through Padodaka-Prasada he was freed from it. This should remain strong: the sacred receiving does not merely comfort him; it cuts the hold of becoming.

The movement of the vachana is therefore from seeing the Sajjana Sharanas, to the mind’s joyful expansion, to holding the Śrī Guru’s feet, to purification, and finally to the cutting away of bhava through Padodaka-Prasada before Kudalasangama Deva.

Lingayoga

In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches the living sequence of Sharana-sanga, Guru-refuge, and Prasada.

The seeker should ask: do I seek the sight and company of true Sharanas? Does such company expand the mind toward Kudalasangama Deva? Do I hold the Guru’s feet with steadiness? Do I receive Padodaka-Prasada as a living force that cuts bhava, or merely as an outer form?

For Sharana Sthala, the practice-point is clear: seek true Sharana-company, hold the Guru’s feet, receive Padodaka-Prasada rightly, and let the hold of becoming be cut through Kudalasangama Deva’s grace.

Editorial Commentary

The first line should be read carefully. It says that on seeing the Sajjana Sharanas, the mind swelled or expanded in joy. The joy of seeing true Sharanas should remain central.

The Guru’s feet and Padodaka-Prasada must also remain central. The vachana is not a general teaching about spiritual company alone. It gives a sequence: seeing true Sharanas, holding the Śrī Guru’s feet, becoming purified, and being freed from bhava through Padodaka-Prasada.

The final phrase “bhavageṭṭenu” should not be softened. Basavanna is saying that the bondage of becoming was cut away. The agency of this release is tied to Padodaka-Prasada and to Kudalasangama Deva.

Supporting Vachana

Pranalingi Sthala Vachana 759 — The Living Kayaka

Pranalingi Vachana 759 supports this teaching by describing the Padodaka-Prasada-jivi, one whose life is sustained by Padodaka and Prasada. It says that seeing such a person is like life returning to one whose life had gone away. This supports Vachana 780 directly. Vachana 780 says that through Padodaka-Prasada the hold of bhava was cut; Vachana 759 gives the supporting form of that life, where sacred receiving and offering become the life-force of the Sharana before Kudalasangama Deva.

Advancing Vachana

Aikya Sthala Vachana 1214 — The Radiance of the Tenfold Padodaka

Aikya Vachana 1214 advances this teaching by gathering Guru, Linga, Jangama, Padodaka, Prasada, Vibhuti, Rudrakshi, Panchakshari, Gana-vrata, and Achara into a complete inner and outer wholeness called eternal Padodaka. This is the natural advancement from Vachana 780. Vachana 780 shows purification through holding the Śrī Guru’s feet and release from bhava through Padodaka-Prasada; Aikya Vachana 1214 carries that sacred current into completion, where Padodaka is no longer an isolated act but the radiant fullness of the whole Sharana path before Kudalasangama Deva.
