Summary
Basavanna says that all the middle-formations do not know the place where Shiva abides. All the former-formations do not know Shiva’s beginning and end. All the time-formations do not know Shiva’s place of stillness, and so they remain within the wheel of time.
The teaching moves through body, past, and time. Whatever arises as formation, memory, sequence, or temporal movement remains unable to know Shiva by its own power. What belongs to becoming cannot grasp the One who is beyond its turning.
The final prayer is for release from the formations of doubt. Basavanna asks Kudalasangama Deva to make him forget all such doubt-bound formations and keep him in the service of His Sharanas. The Sharana-stage teaching is clear: do not remain caught in body-formation, past-formation, time-formation, or doubt-formation. Abide in the service of Kudalasangama Deva’s Sharanas.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The middle-formations are the first image. They suggest the formations active within present embodied experience. These do not know Shiva’s abiding place. Present experience, however immediate, cannot by itself become realization.
The former-formations are the second image. They point to what has gone before — past conditions, prior formations, and accumulated continuity. These too do not know Shiva’s beginning and end.
The time-formations are the third image. They move within the wheel of time. Basavanna shows that what belongs to time cannot know Shiva’s still ground. Time turns, but Shiva is not contained by that turning.
The wheel of time gives the vachana its wider field. It is not merely a clock or calendar. It is the revolving structure of becoming in which formations arise, pass, and return.
The doubt-formations are the final obstruction. Basavanna asks not to remain among them. Doubt here is not casual questioning; it is the formation that keeps awareness moving within uncertainty and separation.
Service of the Sharanas is the remedy. Basavanna does not ask for abstract knowledge of the timeless. He asks to be placed in the service of Kudalasangama Deva’s Sharanas. The path out of doubt and time-bound formation is living service to those established in the Lord.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches that the seeker must not depend upon the formations of body, past, time, or doubt as final sources of knowing. These formations move, but they do not know Shiva’s abiding place.
For Sharana Sthala, the practice-point is service. Basavanna does not try to conquer the wheel of time by conceptual knowledge. He asks to be kept in the service of Kudalasangama Deva’s Sharanas.
This keeps the teaching grounded. Freedom from time-bound formation is not isolation or speculation. It is stabilized through Sharana-seva, where the seeker is held in living relation to those who carry Kudalasangama Deva’s presence.
Editorial Commentary
The word “pinda” should be retained in meaning as formation, embodied cluster, or conditioned aggregate. Basavanna names middle-pinda, former-pinda, time-pinda, and doubt-pinda to show different modes of conditioned becoming. None of these can know Shiva’s abiding truth. The prayer therefore turns away from these formations and toward service of the Sharanas.

Pranalingi Sthala Vachana 820 — Time Arises in the Linga
Pranalingi Vachana 820 supports this teaching by bringing Guru, Jangama, conduct, Anubhava, Samayachara, and Linga into one daily field of realization. It says that what is known through conduct and experience becomes clear in the Linga, and that there is no other way. This prepares Vachana 880 directly. In Vachana 820, time and daily conduct are gathered into Linga-awareness; in Vachana 880, time-bound formations remain trapped in the wheel of time unless the seeker is turned toward Kudalasangama Deva through the service of His Sharanas.
Advancing Vachana
Aikya Sthala Vachana 875 — The Sharana Who Is Not Two
Aikya Vachana 875 advances this teaching by showing the Sharana no longer bound by birth, death, doubt, affirmation, form, formlessness, body, or life. This is the natural Aikya fulfillment of Vachana 880. In Sharana Vachana 880, Basavanna asks to be freed from body-formation, past-formation, time-formation, and doubt-formation by being kept in Sharana-service; in Aikya Vachana 875, the Sharana is beyond becoming, beyond doubt, and beyond comparison before Kudalasangama Deva.
