Summary
Basavanna states the path of purification through threefold offering. He offers the body to the Guru, the mind to the Linga, and wealth to the Jangama. Nothing essential is kept back.
The body is the field of action and conduct. When it is offered to the Guru, life becomes guided and disciplined. The body no longer serves self-will as its first master.
The mind is the field of thought, intention, desire, and awareness. When it is offered to the Linga, inward life is gathered toward Divine presence rather than scattered through private claim.
Wealth is the field of possession and practical extension. When it is offered to the Jangama, resources cease to remain locked in ownership and become part of living sacred participation.
Thus the threefold self is offered to the threefold sacred reality. Basavanna says that through this offering he became purified before Kudalasangama Deva. Purity here is not external cleansing; it is the removal of possessiveness from body, mind, and wealth.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The first image is the body offered to the Guru. The body is where conduct becomes visible. To offer the body to Guru is to place action, labour, discipline, and embodied life under awakened guidance.
The second image is the mind offered to Linga. The mind is subtler than the body and more difficult to surrender. It carries desire, fear, planning, self-image, and memory. When offered to Linga, the mind is no longer treated as private territory.
The third image is wealth offered to Jangama. Wealth is not only stored possession; it is the capacity to act in the world. When given to Jangama, it moves from ownership into service of living sacred presence.
The phrase “threefold to the threefold” gives the vachana its structure. Body, mind, and wealth correspond to Guru, Linga, and Jangama. The offering is complete because the main fields of human life are each placed in their rightful sacred relation.
The final image is purification. Basavanna does not say he became pure by rejecting the body, suppressing the mind, or destroying wealth. He became purified by offering them rightly. What had been self-owned became consecrated.
Kudalasangama Deva is the witness and source of this purification. The threefold offering does not end in self-satisfaction. It is spoken before the Lord, where all offering must become truthful.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches total consecration. The seeker must not offer one part of life while withholding another. Body, mind, and wealth must each be placed in sacred relation.
For Sharana Sthala, the practice-point is direct: offer the body to Guru, the mind to Linga, and wealth to Jangama. Do not keep action, thought, or possession under private ownership while speaking of surrender.
This is purification through right placing. The body becomes guided, the mind becomes centered, and wealth becomes available to living sacred presence. When nothing essential is held back, the burden of “mine” begins to fall away.
Editorial Commentary
The vachana should remain structurally clear. The threefold offering is not a general metaphor; it is specifically body to Guru, mind to Linga, and wealth to Jangama. Its conclusion, “I became purified,” should be read through that precise surrender. Purification arises because the three principal fields of human life are no longer self-possessed.

Supporting Vachana
Prasadi Sthala Vachana 728 — Breath of Being
Prasadi Vachana 728 is used here as the second-option supporting source because it gives the closest verified prior-stage ordering of the same consecrated life. It teaches that the mind must belong to Linga, wealth to Jangama, body to Prasada, and speech to Linga-Jangama-Prasada, so that nothing remains unoffered before Kudalasangama Deva. This prepares Vachana 1176 directly. In Vachana 728, mind, wealth, body, and speech are placed in sacred relation; in Vachana 1176, the Sharana-stage form becomes more concentrated: body to Guru, mind to Linga, wealth to Jangama, and through this threefold offering Basavanna becomes purified.
Advancing Vachana
Aikya Sthala Vachana 1183 — Behold the One Ripened in the Dense Reality
Aikya Vachana 1183 advances this teaching by showing the ripened state that follows complete offering. There, the realized one has offered body, mind, and wealth into Guru, Linga, and Jangama, has become established in Kaya-Prasada, and stands fully established in Shatsthala and Kudalasangama Deva. This is the natural Aikya fulfillment of Vachana 1176. In Sharana Vachana 1176, Basavanna becomes purified through the threefold offering; in Aikya Vachana 1183, that offering ripens into embodied Prasada and complete establishment in the path.
