Summary
Basavanna exposes the futility of misdirected seeking. Holding to the knees of a thief cannot give protection. Searching for a hollow within water cannot give firm ground. Both images show effort placed in the wrong direction.
The seeker remains suspended: neither sinking fully nor reaching the shore. This is the condition of one who clings to ritual alone, inherited form, or external religious correctness without living realization.
The fault is not sincerity by itself, but misplaced dependence. What cannot sustain is treated as refuge; what has no fixed depth is searched as though it could provide foundation.
The final contrast gives the saving movement. Our Kudalasangama Deva takes the seeker’s hand and leads him beyond. The path is not completed by clinging harder to false support. It is completed when the Lord redirects the seeker and carries him beyond misdirected searching.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The first image is holding to the knees of a thief. A thief is not a trustworthy support. To cling there is to depend upon what cannot protect, guide, or preserve.
The knees suggest something grasped in desperation. The seeker is not standing firmly; he is holding on. But the object held is unreliable, so the effort itself becomes futile.
The second image is searching for a hollow within water. A hollow belongs to earth or ground, not to flowing water. The search fails because the thing sought is being sought in the wrong place.
This image sharpens the teaching. The problem is not lack of searching. The problem is searching for firmness in what has no fixed foundation.
The third image is the condition of neither sinking nor reaching firm ground. The seeker does not undergo real transformation, and he does not arrive at stability. He remains suspended between movement and fulfillment.
The phrase pointing to ritual alone should be read through this image. Basavanna is not rejecting sacred practice as such. He is warning against outward religious dependence when it is mistaken for realization.
The final image is Kudalasangama Deva taking the seeker’s hand. The hand that once clung to false support is now held by the Lord. This is the reversal of the whole vachana: false grasping gives way to Divine leading.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches correction of direction. The seeker must examine not only how intensely he seeks, but where and upon what he depends.
For Sharana Sthala, the practice-point is direct: do not cling to what cannot protect, and do not search for depth where there is no ground. Ritual, form, and inherited practice must not be treated as final when they have not become living realization.
The turning point is surrender to Kudalasangama Deva’s guidance. The seeker does not cross by tightening his hold on a false refuge. He crosses when the Lord takes his hand and leads him beyond.
Editorial Commentary
The critique of “ritual alone” should remain precise. The vachana does not condemn all practice or sacred form. It condemns dependence on form without realization, just as holding a thief’s knees and searching for a hollow in water are actions based on a mistaken refuge.

Aikya Vachana 1138 advances this teaching by showing the fulfillment of the search that Vachana 1130 corrects. There, the Reality that could not be seen comes into the seeker’s hands, joy arises, song and dance follow, the eyes behold, and the heart offers devotion to Kudalasangama Deva. This is the natural Aikya fulfillment of Vachana 1130. In Sharana Vachana 1130, the seeker is warned not to seek depth in water or cling to false refuge; in Aikya Vachana 1138, the misdirected search has ended, and the unseen Reality has become directly present in living awareness.
