Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna confesses that bhakti has not arisen in him. He also says that he is empty of yukti, the discernment that should guide devotion.
He then names the deception spread across body, mind, and wealth. The whole field of embodied life has not yet become truthful.
Before Kudalasangama Deva, he concludes that his speech is hollow within. The teaching is direct: without bhakti and yukti, even sacred speech loses inner substance.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The first image is the absence of bhakti. Devotion is not assumed merely because sacred words are spoken or devotional form is present.
The second image is emptiness of yukti. Discernment has not become active, so the seeker cannot rightly measure his own condition.
The third image is deception in body, mind, and wealth. The body may act, the mind may claim, and wealth may be used outwardly, yet all three remain false if they are not joined to inward truth.
The final image is hollow speech. Words are present, but they do not carry realized substance.
Together, these images show inward poverty. Devotion is absent, discernment is empty, life remains deceptive, and speech becomes hollow before Kudalasangama Deva.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana tests the whole field of practice. The body must become truthful in action, the mind in intention, and wealth in offering.
Speech must arise from inner substance, not from emptiness. Otherwise practice remains divided between what is said and what is lived.
The practical movement here is total self-examination. Basavanna does not isolate one fault. He places the entire person before Kudalasangama Deva.
Editorial Commentary
This vachana should be read as a confession of inner hollowness. Basavanna does not claim partial attainment. He says plainly that bhakti is absent and yukti is empty.
The threefold confession is important. Body, mind, and wealth form the field through which a seeker lives, acts, relates, and offers. If deceit remains there, devotion has not yet become whole.
The final line on hollow speech gathers the force of the vachana. Speech is not hollow because it is poorly expressed; it is hollow when the life behind it is not true. Basavanna therefore exposes the danger of speaking devotion while the self remains inwardly unformed.
This is not despair. It is truthful seeing. The hollow voice becomes the beginning of correction when it admits its own hollowness before Kudalasangama Deva.

Bhakta Sthala Vachana 300 — Forging the Unbreakable Vessel
Bhakta Sthala Vachana 300 supports this vachana by praying that there be no deceit in body, mind, and wealth. Vachana 308 shows the opposite condition: these very fields remain deceptive because bhakti has not arisen and yukti is empty. What Vachana 308 confesses as hollowness, Vachana 300 seeks to correct through testing and strengthening before Kudalasangama Deva.
Advancing Vachana
Prasadi Sthala Vachana 936 — Dasoha at Every Stage
Prasadi Sthala Vachana 936 advances this movement by showing the mature correction of the hollowness confessed in Vachana 308. Here, bhakti is absent, yukti is empty, and life remains deceptive. In Vachana 936, bhakti becomes Dasoha, yukti becomes Dasoha, and even the sense of “mine” in Aikya is surrendered before Kudalasangayya.
