Vachana 519- The Only Concern Worth Having

Summary

In this vachana, Basavanna asks why he should carry another’s concern when his own concern is already enough.

The seeker’s attention must not scatter into comparison, judgment, or needless anxiety about others. One question is sufficient: has Kudalasangayya accepted me, or has He not?

Basavanna says that this concern is his bedding and his covering. It is not a passing thought. It is the condition in which he rests, wakes, and lives before Kudalasangama Deva.

Imagery & Symbolic Relevance

Another’s concern represents outward distraction. It may appear as curiosity, comparison, criticism, or anxiety about another person’s path.

Basavanna turns away from that. He says his own concern is enough.

That concern is precise: whether Kudalasangayya has accepted him. This question gathers the whole life into one inward measure.

The bedding is the first image of constancy. It is what one lies upon. Basavanna rests upon this concern.

The covering is the second image. It is what surrounds and protects the body. In the same way, this concern surrounds his inner life.

Together, bedding and covering show uninterrupted remembrance. The question of acceptance is beneath him and over him. It becomes the atmosphere of devotion.

Lingayoga

In Lingayoga, the Anga must guard attention.

The mind easily turns toward others: their state, their faults, their progress, their recognition. Such movement weakens inward steadiness.

Basavanna brings the mind back to its essential relation with Linga: am I accepted by Kudalasangama Deva?

This is not restless anxiety. It is vigilant remembrance. It keeps the seeker from spiritual assumption.

Practice matures when attention stops scattering outward and remains gathered around the living relation between Anga and Linga.

Editorial Commentary

This vachana disciplines concern.

Basavanna does not reject compassion for others; he rejects the scattered mind that avoids its own unresolved relation to Kudalasangama Deva.
