Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna shows that action and speech return to the one who performs them. If one strikes, the blow rests in one’s own hand. If one scolds, the harsh word rests in one’s own hand.
He then turns from former birth to present experience. Whatever the former birth may have been, today’s experience is in one’s own hand.
The final movement brings the teaching before Kudalasangama Deva. The fruit of worshipping Him is also in one’s own hand. The vachana therefore places responsibility, consequence, and worship in the immediacy of present conduct.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The first image is striking. A blow does not disappear after it is given. Its consequence remains with the hand that struck.
The second image is scolding. Harsh speech also remains with the one who speaks it. Speech is not separate from the speaker.
The third image is the hand. The hand becomes the sign of immediate responsibility. What is done is not far away; it is held by the doer.
The fourth image is former birth. Basavanna does not allow the seeker to hide behind what came before. Whatever may be said of the past, today’s experience is present now.
The fifth image is today’s enjoyment or experience. The present life is not empty of responsibility. Its fruit is already being shaped.
The final image is the fruit of worship. Worship of Kudalasangama Deva is not postponed to a distant result. Its fruit rests in the same immediacy as action and speech.
Together, these images show that life cannot be separated from what one does, says, and worships. The hand that acts also bears the fruit.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana tests practice through present conduct. Action, speech, and worship must not be treated as separate fields.
The striking hand and the speaking mouth show that conduct has immediate consequence. The worshipping hand also carries its fruit.
The practical movement here is responsibility. Basavanna turns the seeker from blame or delay toward what is being done now before Kudalasangama Deva.
Editorial Commentary
This vachana should be read as a teaching on immediate consequence. Basavanna does not let the seeker place responsibility elsewhere. The fruit of action, speech, present experience, and worship is held in one’s own hand.

Bhakta Sthala Vachana 560 — The Offering That Truly Reaches You
Bhakta Sthala Vachana 560 supports this vachana by teaching that worship must be joined to non-harm and remembrance. Vachana 170 carries the same concern into the hand itself: the hand that strikes bears its result, and the hand that worships Kudalasangama Deva bears its fruit.
Advancing Vachana
Prasadi Sthala Vachana 853 — The Flood of Love
Prasadi Sthala Vachana 853 advances this movement by showing the hand fulfilled in worship. Vachana 170 says that the fruit of worship rests in one’s own hand. Vachana 853 carries this into Prasadi Sthala, where the hands overflow and move only in worship, while the heart remains filled with Kudalasangama Deva.
